I'm finally average!

I'm not "normal" yet, but I'm finally "average" for my age, height and weight! I'm wearing a size 10 pants now and I still wear a 12 or 14 in my tops. Technically, I'm still overweight, but I have to say that I look and feel more normal today than I have since I was little girl.

Physically, I feel so much better today, than I did this time last year or even this past spring. Yesterday I worked in the yard for a couple of hours. I worked hard enough to work up some heavy breathing and a sweat, but I was able to do it for a couple of hours. I would not have been able to do that 5 or 7 months ago.

I saw myself in a window last night and realized that this slimmer, more fit person is the new me. I'm taking responsibility for me in ways I never have before. I am owning up to my weaknesses and looking for ways to mitigate or steer clear of them. It's taking a while to get used to her/me this way, but I like what I see in my reflection; the physical and internal.

I look forward to eventually being "normal", but today I'm happy with being "average."

Wow, you are just doing SO great, Barb!  It is so impressive to see how your ticker just keeps steadily moving down.  I still feel as though my progress is so slow!  What is a "normal" BMI?  And what is just plain "overweight"?  Congratulations on your "average" status!  LOL

Suzanne -

Thank you so much for your kind words. I appreciate them and you, more than I can say. I know that it feels like you aren't moving very fast. When I see Jennifer, Diane, and Ellen flying past me I can feel the wind; but then I remember that this is not a race and my weight will leave me in it's own time. You are really doing very well. Keep working on it. By this time next year, we'll all get together, look at old photos and wonder at the blessings we've enjoyed during the past year.

Re: where did I find average ... a couple of places. The easiest place to find it is http://www.thinnerself.com and click on the Chart Wt and Inches button. Plug in your info and click the Calculate Current button. It will tell you, based on statistical averages, the percentage of excess weight you can expect to lose based on your start date and the weight you've lost to date. (My percentage has fluctuated from 87% to 100% expected loss of excess weight.) After you do that if you Click the Create Report button, a new window will open and will display a chart that plots your weight loss to date. It will also show you a low percentage of excess weight loss projection, a high loss expectation, "average" and "ideal" weights for someone your age, hieght and sex. If you scroll down, if provides a whole bunch of other interesting tidbits of information. I don't take it all as gospel, but I do find it interesting and it matches up closely with the information my dr gave me.

Hope you enjoy!

Hi Barb, You are such a wonderful inspiration and source of encouragement to all of us here.  You are bright and articulate, kind and funny!  I look at you and wish I could be more like you.  You look great in your clothes, you look great in your "skin." I think what I find most overwhelming is that I am so incredibly "well."  I find it staggering how "ill" I was 100 lbs heavier; at how much I blamed on age, life and work when it was ME! I feel better than I did 20 years ago.  I am happier, look and feel better and I am healthier.  I do have a small hanging belly, but not enough to even hit the pubic area.  I still have 38 lbs to lose, and I know that will pretty much leave with the weight.  I thank my Mom everyday for the good elasticity in my skin.  I don't have batwings primarily because I have lifted and packed out heavy boxes of car parts every day for the past 8 years. It kept my arms toned. If possible, I will get the TT, just to flatten things out as much as possible.  I can feel my tail bone when I sit, my ribs, hips and even my femur in my thighs.  I can feel the vertebraes in my back, my collar bones... it is nothing short of a miracle.   I think the only area that hasn't bounced back is my chin and neck.  I have a turkey neck and may get that done for fun.  But remember, I am 55, widowed and who cares but me? People are friendlier to me now, but that is our society, our culture that shuns obesity.  It's just a fact of life.  The good news is, we never will.  Obese folks suffer in ways that only those that have been there know.  There is a love in my heart for overweight folks that will die only when I do. As for being in the average, normal categories, it is a blessing.  But if I had to chose a category, hands down it would be healthy.  I thank God for a good strong heart, back, legs and feet.  I thank God I have the faculties to continue to work every day, to pay my bills and to give back to a world that needs me and has given so generously to me in the past. Is anything missing?  Sure. I wish I had a companion with similiar beliefs and desires.  I would like that very much, but God did not mean for all of us to be married.  I have been on my own for almost 14 years now since Sam died and I don't know if I could readjust. Sorry for rambling. Love you Barb, Diane
