Be careful what you ask for!!! (Sorry, this is kinda long)

I started this journey in July when I realized I had quit smoking 5 years ago , then realized I had been on a diet for 5 years (gained alot more weight when I quit) and was still MO. I went through all of the emotions, realizing that I was a big girl and everyone knew it and now, since I have developed hypertension and diabetes in the last 5 years.....I knew something had to give.  So, I began the process. No big hurry, just calmly working through the steps, telling spouse and children, then family,  PCP, Surgeons visits, Nut, Psyc, endo, you all know what I am talking about.  Then about 3 weeks ago, the surgeons office called and asked for a 5 yr history of visits and weights with PCP.  I figured it would take a while so I waited 2 weeks and called and she said, Oh, I sent that to the surgeon on Oct 18. WOW, so I called the surgeon,(the next day, ever so slowly, being calm.) And she said , OH, we mailed your information to the insurance on the 19th. (very nervous now.) I didn't tell a soul. I kept this info quiet....until Friday morning, Nov, 2. I told my husband, casually , Oh, by the way, the insurance has my info. Wow he says. So I work nights, got up Fri afternoon. Letter in the mail from UHC. Must be a denial, I thought. It couldn't possibly have been long enough yet. Oh my gosh!!!!! It said, We are pleased to inform you that your surgery is covered under your insurance plan. You may schedule an appointment with your surgeon. I instantly became nauseated and lightheaded.  OH MY GOSH!!!!!! BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU ASK FOR!!!! I am very thankful, just a little (OK alot) beside myself. In reading other posts, I guess my fear is somewhat normal. I will soon be on the losing side! Ramona

My whole process started in mid June and I had surgery on October 15th. I almost felt guilty after hearing how long some people have to wait. Best of luck to you and I hope you get a date soon. Beth

Hi Ramona! Sounds like you're making progress all right!  Does that mean they have approved you?  It sounded as though they were only saying that that type of surgery is covered by them.  Not trying to burst your bubble... just being cautious.  If it only says covered then I would double check.  Nonetheless, that is good news!

Congratulations Ramona!  You're right, nervousness is normal.  It's major surgery, it's good that you are respecting that.  Do what you can now to develop good habits for postop.  Start walking now, every day as much as you can, practice eating small bites and chewing well, try to stop drinking with your meals, and start taking your vitamins.  It does pay off. Take care and keep us posted. Ellen

Own it all, it's yours!

Welcome Ramona!

I can so relate to your feelings.  I quit smoking on St. Pat's day of 2005 and the lbs. slowly piled up before I knew what hit me.  I'm 2 weeks and 2 days post surgery and couldn't be happier with my decision.  You are normal for emotions to be all over the place, so take deep breaths and be happy about what is getting ready to happen in your life!
