Did you advance yourself early?

I know you aren't suppose to, but there's so much variation in when to advance the diet. I've totally adhered to all my surgeons rec's, but I do feel like I could pass out from lack of calories if I tired to do very much ( I haven't or anything, I just have that feeling) and I'm wondering how much difference is Friday vs. Monday to go to full liquids.

Sabrina, first off, You go girl with the 9 lbs!  I know you are proud and you should be.  As far as starting early, I'm not RNY but my thoughts are- you've gone through so much so far to risk goofing anything up!  There's a reason behind his thinking. Nancy

If I have done anything post-op it has been to stick to my surgeon's guidelines about when to introduce new foods.. In fact at times I have stayed on a stage longer to avoid any problems.  I am with Nancy on this one.. Why chance it?  And right now you need to rest.  You are only a few days post op and you need REST!!!  Take it easy.  Be patient.

Congrats on the 9 pounds!

Sabrina -

I'm with Nancy ... If you are really going nuts, call the Dr's office and see if you can advance the shift to full liquids. Are getting anything with protien at this time?

It's early, Sweetie.  I'm with Barb.  Call your surgeon and see if tomorrow is ok.  He MUST be allowing you protein drinks.  Surely you aren't on clear liquids til Monday???  Perhaps you misunderstood.  Call your surgeon tomorrow before the weekend hits.

No, I'm totally on clears until Monday. Then on Monday I can go to full liquid which would include the protein drinks and a bit more variety. The only source of protein I'm getting right now is the broth and I did buy some isopure that has some protein. That's why I'm wondering about moving along, I was nervous to take a shower without my dh being home since...seriously I thought I might get a bit shakey, other than that I'm feeling pretty great.

Good grief!  That IS a long time!  I know I was on clear liquids and then NOTHING for 7 days and I was getting weak and cranky.  Then they FINALLY stuck a PICC line in me so I could get SOME nutrition!  Had that in for almost 3 weeks.  I tell you girl, I was READY for some food of any kind by the time they took that PICC line out!  I wasn't even allowed to swallow ice chips!  But I did get all my nutritional needs met once the PICC line was put in.  That week without any nourishment at all was NO fun, so I can certainly understand your craving.  That's the first time I have heard of any surgeon requiring clear liquids for a full week!  They are all different, however.  It won't hurt to call him.

Sabrina, My Dr had me on clear liquids for a whole week after leaving the hospital.  They do it for a reason.  That's a whole new pouch in there, and the full liquids are heavier.  Let it have all the time to heal that your Dr recommended!  I was tired for quite a while too.  The key is to try really hard to get your protein.  I found the easiest way on clear liquids were the protein bullets (I use the 25/27 gram ones.)  They don't taste fabulous, but if I plug my nose and drink a third every 15 minutes or half hour, they're tolerable.  That will help give you some energy.   Bottom line, you had a major surgery, so it's going to take some time to get your energy back.  But if you really want to change the eating plan, I wouldn't do it without Dr's approval! Good luck!

I am going to go against what most of the group says... I dont feel its a big deal to move to full liquids sooner... if you were talking jumping to soft foods or normal eating before the time... Id be more hesitant. I would call the surgeons office and ask them... let them know that you feel you are needing more etc and see what they say.

Jennifer, I probably will give them a call. Like everyone else I don't want to do anything to jeopardize my surgery. There really is so much variation on how to advance the diet and being a nurse I know that it's really a personal style thing with different surgical practices and probably not that much based on science.
