Hi. My name is Susan. :) I'm looking for a WL surgeon in the Peidmont area that accepts Medicaid Insurance. I don't have much $ to pay out up front. I am interested in RNY gastric bypass surgery.  The first Dr. I contacted required $1000 up front to cover psych. counseling/Nutritionist fees, etc.!  I am in desperate need of having WLS. I am on a fixed income and need to find something I can afford. Any advise or suggestions? Your help is greatly appreciated! :)

You may want to check with NCBH - Dr Fernendez ('Fuzzy") or the Dr's group at Durham - I know they have patients on Medicaid and Medicaid even paid for this girls plastic surgerys too. Best of luck on your search. Staci

Hey Susan, welcome to the NC Forum. I live in Greensboro (well, technically Jamestown), and I'm using Adolfo Fernandez (Fuzz, as Smoore mentioned). This is with Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. Fuzz and his staff have impressed me quite a bit - they are knowledgeable, helpful, and really just want the best for you. But,, there is about $1,000 in upfront costs - $500 to Dr. Smith, who does the psychological evaluation, $150 to Amber Norris, the NUT, for the nutritional evaluation. Then, it's another $350ish to her for the nutritional class. But, in addition to all of this, both Dr. Smith and Amber are present at every post-op appointment/consultation. You are paying for a year (or more) of post-op follow ups. I was very pleased to know that I will see Fuzz, Dr. Smith and Amber after surgery. I may be mistaken, but I was under the impression that most doctors who are doing the evals basically require cash/check/money up front. If this is true, I would definitely suggest going to Wake Forest. The drive is not bad at all, from Greensboro, and honestly, for the gas money I'm paying, the staff there is SO worth it!

Hi Susan, As the others said Dr Fuzz at Wake Forest is great. I started with him about 2 years ago and had to stop midstream due to Medicares changing of rules. The hospital has to be a center of excellence and there are about 7 or 8 in NC. Dr Fuzz is not one of them. I have started going to duke since they are the closest and take the medicare Also as the others said they all require money upfront. Some additional testing may also have to be done. For ex I have to get a cardiology clearance, TSH has to be normal Good luck to you
