I take 1400 a day of Calcium Citrate (Make sure you have citrate, not bicarbonate.), going to add more today.  As far as D3, I hadn't been taking this, I'll look into it.  Also, everyone should be taking a good multivititamin, and Sublingual B12.  In addition to that, I take C, E, Selenium, Biotin, and a Hair Skin and Nails Vitiamin.  You all cannot ignore vitamins.  They are vital to your health and your success.  If your doctor didn't give you a vitamin regimen, call your Nut and ask.  If they're not helpful, they're just not well informed.  There is a wealth of information on this board and most of it is sound.  Just be careful and do your own research too. Take care. Ellen

Yes. The doctor told me this week to take 2000 units of vitamin D. That is good for the teeth. He said I had no d in me. I have to take shots of vit. b12 every monday now. I am 2 years out and never took my vitamins. I was scared they would make me gain weight. WHAT THE HELL WAS I THINKING.  Trust me it will hurt you down the road if you don't take them. I am proof of that. My eyes are about flippin gone. I can't see very well at all. He said I could break a bone very easy try my best not to fall. I am only 43 years old. I have the body of a 90 year old. My back is all humped over I can't hold my shoulders up. My back can't hold me up. I sit more than I do any thing. I roll around in my chair at work. Thank god it has wheels on it. People at work think I am just playing in my chair. I try to laugh and make it a joke. But it is not joke. I don't want my work people to know how bad I am. I am scared of getting fired. I beg anyone and everyone out there please take your vitamins. Please don't end up like me. I can't even enjoy being skinny and it's not all that I thought it would be being skinny. Sorry this was so long.  god bless all and go take your vitamins........... lots of love amy

Very good article. I think its important to remember we are WLS patients FOR LIFE. Even thou we may look 'normal' on the outside its still important to keep taking vitamins and suppliments for life. Many times it takes quite some time of not taking care of ones self for issues to show up and then it can be too late!

Ok. So this has me a little scared. I'm currently going through orthodontic treatment. I've had my braces for a little over a year. I've paid good money to get my teeth straight and when I asked my orthodontist about WLS affecting my teeth he said it should not. I'll hopefully have surgery prior to getting my braces removed...maybe I'll ask to wear them a bit longer than needed while I'm experiencing most of my weight loss. I'll for sure take my supplements as ordered...and maybe some extra calcium and vitamin d. I certainly do not want the work accomplished in my mouth to be undone. Has anyone else seen changes as far as their teeth shifting after surgery?

I'm only 4 months post op, but to date I haven't noticed any shifting. After reading the article, I'll be scheduling an appointment with a dentist very soon.

I think that we will be okay if we are vigilent about taking care of ourselves, and for us that means taking our supplements religiously.

You won't see that for a couple of years.  That's why it's so important to take care of yourself from the beginning.  The same is true of protein.  You have to begin to get your minimum (at least) requirements of protein in as soon as it is feasible post surgery(not the first two weeks).  You won't experience hair fall out until 3-5 months out, but it's from protein, or the lack there of, earlier.  You can't wait until you see the results before making the effort. Take care and let us know how your surgery goes. Ellen

What did she mean by dry...d 3 ?  And did anyone understand what source she got it from like a company or something. Do all of you take sublingal B12?  I am confused. Myrtis

You have to take sublingual B12, it is an essential vitamin and the part of the intestine that it is absorbed in is what is removed in RNY.  The only way for you to get it is Subligually, which just means under the tongue.  Dry D3 just means not an oil base.  I bought pills yesterday, they're little and go down easy. Hope that helps. Take care. Ellen
