My 1st post... Here I come y'all!
Hey everybody!
I registered a while back on the forum but just been lurking around
reading and doing my homework. I'm sitting here on pins and needles waiting for Dr. MacDonald to call me (who did Mindy's surgery). I started out with another doc in the practice but for several reasons, changed to Dr. MacD. I had already had my endoscopy back in July, but Dr. MacD does all his own, so I had to have another one last Friday. When I woke up, the first thing he did was reiterate to me what he'd told me 2 days before... that I'm NOT a good candidate for lap band (sigh!) due to the lesions on my danged old hiatal hernia. Well bust my bubble!
THEN, he proceeded to tell me that "On your duodenum, I saw a cluster of nodules, and in all my many years of doing surgery, I've never seen anything like 'it' and wouldn't even venture a guess as to what 'it' might be, but I did a biopsy!"
So I said, "NOW WHAT?!?"
He said we'd talk about it the "end of next week" (as in RIGHT NOW) and see what the biopsy says. Well needless to say my nerves are frazzled
waiting on him to call and tell me what the biopsy says. Why don't doctors understand how important a 2 minute phone call can be when their patients are waiting on biopsy reports?!?! Because they have never been on the receiving end?!?!
I'm pure nauseated
with this waiting, and we can tell ourselves (like my sweet sister is telling me) not to worry, but as hard as I'm trying NOT to, I can't help myself!
Meanwhile, I decide to keep my mind busy and hopped on here to the forum. I just happened to click on a post in the main forum by Allie http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/amos/a,messageboard/action ,replies/board_id,4856/cat_id,4456/topic_id,3423241/
whose doc has told HER the same thing (now in her 12th day or so of being hospitalized). I PMed her just a few minutes ago about this so we're going to stay in touch and I'm going to let her know what Dr. MacD says about mine when he calls. He had better call SOON or I'm going to Greenville to find him!
His nurse promised me he'd call this afternoon. I called the office at 2 minutes till 5 before they closed and they said he STILL is not back at the office but he's been paged and given my numbers 2 times!
I'm a planner and all my well laid plans are falling apart and it's driving me NUTS!
I went from (in March) thinking my only option was Roux-en-Y and being content with that, to learning BCBS does pay for lap bands (contrary to what they told me earlier), and being elated about that, to just last week being told I'm not a good band candidate and need to have the REY! And then these "nodules" being found.
I"m not a drink'n woman, but WOULD SOMEBODY pour me a drank... LOL
I'm looking forward to making my journey with you other North Carolinians. I'll back back soon... now, if that damn phone would just R.I.N.G....................................................

Good morning! Well, he FINALLY called last night about 10:30, but only after I called the answering service every 30 minutes and bugged the he** out of Dr. Mann who was on call. Long story short, turns out I have several things "wrong" that were discovered in my endoscopy.
I have Barrett's esophagus AND Brunner's Gland. Won't get into all that here because honestly, I'm still trying to learn about them myself. He spoke in "doctorese" and even though I'm pretty intelligent, I didn't get all that he said. I did ask him to spell everything and naturally, as soon as we got off the phone I got online and started trying to educate myself. He's never seen either of these before so he is going to consult with some Gastro docs he respects and possibly also radiologists. So at this point, I don't know if my surgery on Thursday is a go or not. He can't answer that until he speaks with these other docs for their input and opinions! So everything has turned upside down for me.
I am grateful for this 2nd endoscopy so that these problems were found, but also a little worried. He said these things, for now, are not malignant but the Barrett's esophagus is "pre-cancerous." That's pretty unsettling. He said it may be these things are treated "intensely" for 6-8 weeks with meds and then reevaluate for the surgery, or if the gastro docs so proceed, we will go ahead with it as scheduled.
For you pray'n folks out there, please throw one in for me these next few days. I'm going to go out and try to enjoy the weekend and headed to my 3yo nephew's soccer game now and taking him to the fair tomorrow. Gotta keep myself busy and not sit by the phone as a hostage like I did yesterday!
Y'all have a greattttttttttttt weekend too!
Hi Wendy!
First of all, welcome to the NC Forum! It's always nice to see new faces and benefit from your sharing.
Sounds like that second endoscopy was a blessing, all right! But of course I certainly understand your anxiety. You certainly have a lot on your plate so close to your surgery date! Keep sharing. A burden shared is cut in half, while a blessing shared is doubled!
