I'm Home

I got home Friday around 10:30 am.  I went right to bed while my Dad went to get my Loratab rx.  I do feel better each day, but when people describe the first initial days of "feeling like you were hit by a mack truck," they aren't kidding.

I was so glad to get home, get a shower and sleep in my own bed.  I have always liked a lot of pillows so it has helped me find a comfortable position on my sides because my back has hurt too much over the last 5 months for me to lie on my back.  That became very difficult in the hospital.

One tip, someone at my church that had had WLS talked about getting a small pillow from the hospital to use when getting up.  I forgot about it until I was getting ready to be willed out of my room and saw someone walking with one.  I asked for one and boy, do I wish I had had it the first day.

PCMH was great and the only problem I had was being sure I got my heparin on time.  Both shifts of nurses were good.  My Dad is going to leave today.  I get better each day and just mainly need to stay off my feet when needed and rest.  I thankfully never had any gas from the lap gas, but do walk around often just to help my muscles and the healing. I agree with others that initially you do question "what in the world have I done!"  It does get better each day.

Welcome home!  Glad to hear that all went well.  I'm not looking forward to the "mack truck" fun, but it will pass with time.  That fact that you say it gets better every day helps.

I have a question.  How do you use the pillow to help you get up?  And what do you mean a small pillow?  Is it just a regular pillow that's not too fluffy?  I want to be as prepared as possible!   I hope you continue to feel better every day, soon you'll be telling us that you're officially on the loser's bench...warm it up for me!

The pillow I was given was an oval shaped body width pillow that was pretty well stuffed.  Not totally firm, but feels good helping you get up and down.  I discovered that one of my sofa pillows would have done the same thing.  I highly recommend it.  Usually the hospitals have one.

Hi Belinda -

Glad to hear that you are home and resting more comfortably now. As you say, it will get better with each passing day.

Keep walking, sipping and getting in that protien which will help you heal and give you strength. Stay on top of the pain ... Over time, it really gets a lot better. I was fortunate and didn't have to use a great deal of the pain meds that they sent home, but I was glad that I used it when I needed it.

Take care and welcome to the loser's bench.

Welcome home Belinda!  It will get better each day!  Just keep moving every hour for at least a few mins.  That will ease any pain considerably, and help you avoid clots and heal.  And keep yourself well hydrated which means sip even when you don't feel you are thirsty.  Glad all went well.

Belinda, it's great to hear you're home and resting.  I am not looking forward to the first few days but you have to get past that to get to the good days.  If you need anything, please let me know.  I am close by and will be happy to help out.   Alice

Hey Belinda.  I'm so glad you are home and doing okay.  I am nearby if you need me for anything.  I want to say I'm sorry that I couldn't get in to see you while you were in PCMH.  My car died on me Wednesday night when I tried to go to choir practice.  I spent Thursday dealing with that and ended up buying a new (to me) car.  You know how long that takes.... I hope things continue to go well for you. Take care. Ellen

Thanks everybody.  It does get better each day although the pain is still there right now.  I sleep for about 2-3 hour stretches, but at least I am getting some sleep.  I read on the RNY forum that someone was telling someone else that this was the "easy way out."  Oh, please!!!!!

"Easy way out"... No, I don't think so. Anyone that has gone through even the pre-op "stuff" knows better than that. People kill me, I tell you. So glad to hear you are doing better and home! Maybe we can try to get together sometime soon since we are all so close-- after we recoup! :)  Listen to what the ladies say and feel better!!! :)
