I'm reading a book written by a nutritionist and the chapter I just finished delt with that subject.    She was explaining the whole sugar alcholol mystery and how it plays a part in blood sugar etc.  But the bottom line was to count total carbs, not just "net" carbs.  Not sure if that helps or not.....  alice

Sugar alcohols are have less calories and are non-blood sugar impacting carbs. The body metabolizes them before they effect the blood sugar. (net carbs).  So some products do not count them as total carbs.  I have heard this work for some and not for others, I guess it would depend on your body. I remember way back in the day when I was Atkins, I had been doing really well, then these new candies came out I started having a few of them a day....I think it really messed me up. (I probably ate too many).  I hope this helps a little. =0)   Sarah

Hey Jennifer -

Sugar Alcohol are carbs that aren't as calorie packed as sugar, but provide sweetness. They are commonly used in reduced sugar or sugar free items. When counting sugar alcohol, divide by 2; so if an item has 10 gms of sugar alcohol on the label, count it as 5 gms of sugar. Here is a link to a nice explanation of the sugar alcohol if you want more information: http://lowcarbdiets.about.com/od/whattoeat/a/sugaralcohols.h tm

I hope that helps.
