Does anybody have any experience with the BCBS NC State Employee Plan? If so, can you tell me what they require as far as a six month diet? I've also heard that they require 6 months of a weekly visit with a nutritionist..... If anyone has been covered by this plan, can you please give me some advice for getting approved?

I have BCBS state employees insurance PPO.  They did not require a diet, nor  6 months of visits with a nut.  Call your insurance and see what is required for approval.  My Dr. office said that this insurance was one of the better one's to work with, and I can honestly tell you I was approved within one day!  Good luck to you on your journey! I called them and they refered me to a section on their website.  It's their "policy" for gastric bypass surgery.  I didn't see anything about a 6 month diet....  Here is a link.... check it out. https://www.bcbsnc.com/services/medical-policy/pdf/surgery_f or_morbid_obesity.pdf I will be undergoing the approval process next week.  Good luck, Alice

Im also a State Employee (teachers) I had no preop diet at all. My approval came pretty much instantly. It was a very easy process with my doctor's office!

BCBS NC is GREAT to work with....What you have to send them is the letter from the doctor, the initial consult, nutrition and psych eval, your TSH results from your labs, and a 4 -5 year weight history.  Good Luck!!!!!

I have BCBS State Health Plan PPO and all they needed was my 5 year history and the other approval stuff from my surgeon.  There was no supervised diet, just the ones that I had tried previously, no work with a nutritionist, aside for the one visit that is required by my surgeon, that was all.  I was approved in 2 days when my paper work was submitted.  And I only had to come off of around $1200 out of pocket for everything.

Just as others have said, I've been told by my surgeon's office that NC BCBS PPO is one of the best insurance's to work with. I had to provide documented weight for the past 5 years and written information where I have tried diets before, but that was it! The SO said it should be really quick for approval-- I'm hoping for a surgery date the day I meet with my surgeon. Good luck to you!
