I was informed by my Psych. that she e-mail her approval to Dr. K's office on Sept. 5th. I e-mail Lisa Green and she replyed back saying it will take up to 30 days to get an approval. Does this sound right?

My insurance (UHC) takes that long - apparently they send it for manual review. When I had my reduction a few years ago it took right on about 21 days.

I have UHC also. Several employees have had the RYN and have been approved. What is manual review? Is there more than one kind of review? Who do you work for?

I think its manual because UHC doesn't really create the policies, they're the property of the company we work for like Time Warner (me) or Wachovia. UHC just manages them. Some things that aren't "elective" (just because we can choose when they really think we havea choice on this? LOL) don't require manual review - if you were going to get an appendix out or whatever.  Some surgeries like say hip replacements only require a 1 week notice, but I think I would want the "OK" in writing anyways (scary to think you'd have it and then they'd say umm nope!). So these types of surgeries go to an actual doctor *****views the criteria and your information and goes from there.

The insurance company, by law, has a certain number of days they are allowed to review requests. They will always quote you the max time no matter what. They may take 1 day, they make take 2 weeks... they may take the entire 30 days... everybody has different turn around times.

I have UHC and when mine was submitted, they told me that they had 14 work days to come to a determination. It took 9 days to get "through the mill" when they were checking it to be sure that they had all the information they needed make a determination. After that it went into medical review. It only took a day and half once it was sent a person to look at it.

Hope that helps.
