7 Days out - feeling blahhhhhhh!

Hi All, I am a week out from an uneventful surgery and have some questions.  It seems that each day I feel a little worse than the day before.  All I care to do is sit in my recliner wrapped in a blanket.  I am trying hard to get in my proteins and water but have to admit I've missed the mark everyday.  I am just about sick of protein shakes and need some suggestions on ways to change up the liquid diet some.  I've done cream soups, broth, protein shakes, jellos etc along with water and crystal light and have been taking my vitamins as described.  My followup with the Dr is Tuesday, I can't wait to get the staples out.  I am sure that will perk me up some as they are causing some pain.  I have lost weight, 19 lbs since the week before the surgery when I was on the Drs prescribed cabbage soup diet.  Any suggestions are welcomed as I don't want to spend the weekend feeling like this.   Thanks! Jaime

Jaime, Althought I did not have the same surgery as you, I felt the same way.  It will pass.  Just keep with the protein and water....get plenty of rest.  You're not expected to feel rosy after surgery, your body is still trying to recoup.  Give it the time it needs!  Hope you feel better next week.  Sip sip sip Nancy

Jaime -

You're in the midst the roughest part of this journey. It will start getting better. Remember that you have had major surgery. It really does take a while for you to re-coup, but you will. You will start feeling better soon ... I promise. Re: what to do about the protien and fluids... Honestly, this is something that takes time too. I honestly don't know of anyone who was able to get it all in right away. You do the best you can and you will find that you'll do a little better every day or two. I know that for me if I never see another Ensure or Boost that'll be fine by me. I can't stand the stuff, but remember that this too shall pass. Continue to have the savory items like the soups to relieve some of the overload of sweet stuff.

If you can, try taking short walks. It helps keep the blood from pooling ... a good way to prevent blood clots which are possible up to a month after any surgery. It also kind of helps with the blues.

I hope to hear that you're feeling better soon.

Warm regards,

Barb

Just focus on doing the best you can!! My surgeon said not to worry about meeting the nutritional goals for the first two-four weeks... its all a learning process and takes time. As for not feeling all that great... major surgery and anesthesia takes a big toll on the body. I know you want to just stay laying in the chair with the blanket but get up and get outside and walk some... or get to the mall and walk in the a/c... that should help you feel a little better - just dont over do it!
