Preop Liquid diet

My md doesn't require you to do the 2 week liquid diet, but from everything I've read it's probably a good idea to do some modification of a liquid diet . Is the preop diet essentially the same as the week 1 post op liquid diet? I plan to at least attempt it preop. I want my liver as skinny as possible, lol

Hey there!  My surgeon required for us to have a no starch low protien diet with the day before surgery clear liquids.  Any weighloss prior to surgery is fabulous and will shrink that liver of yours.  Good luck and keep us posted!  Candice

do you mean high protein diet? I had to do a 2 week pre-op liquid diet and mine was clear liquids with the exception of protein shakes.  I was to drink as many shakes a day as I could stand (blech.) and then clear chicken or beef broth, water (crystal light or other similar,) unflavored jello (double blech) and sugar free popsicles.  It was one of the hardest things I've ever done...it drove me crazy.  LOL!!

Hey Candice, Do you have some examples of what would be good to eat on the low protein no carb side? That's sort of what my md said he has you do too.

Below is a sample day in my life as a pre-oppers... They wanted us to practice the 5 meals a day and really "store up" the protien pre-op.  Hope this helps. Breakfast - Egg and Turkey Sausage Snack - protien shake Lunch- Salad with some type of protien (chicken, beef, shrimp) Snack- yogart Dinner-  3oz Protein and a nonstarchy Vegetable

I also have Dr. Bauman.  It's great you are getting in the frame of mind for this beforehand, but please don't burn yourself out of liquids before surgery, because you will surely be sick and tired of them for 2 weeks afterward.  I just really watched what and how much I ate, and did fine. Nancy

I would speak to your MD before making any changes to your diet pre-op.... since they are the one doing the surgery its best to follow their orders. Not all surgeons require a pre-op liquid diet... in fact across the board many do not... just happens in NC quite a few do. Some surgeons are against the pre-op liquid diet and feel its not necessary or that it does more harm as good. If your surgeon isnt worried about your liver - I wouldnt worry either!

I must not have posted clearly. I wasn't planning on doing liquids now. I just wanted to streamline right before surgery. I actually did talk to him about it which is how I know that he doesn't really require it. Yet all my research has said  it's probably a good idea to do some type of modification, does that make more sense? Perhaps I'll speak w/the nutritionist.
