"WINE-ing"

OK, my friends, I have a question for ya. I was watching Brookhaven: Obesity Clinic on TLC, I think. There was a male patient on there who they were considering for GBP surgery. In his intiail consult with surgeon, they asked him if he smokes or drinks alcohol before they would even consider the surgery.  I do not smoke (yuck) so my question is this: Do I need to quit drinking wine before surgery?  I mean, I love a glass or two of Pinot Noir or Merlot with dinner 2 or 3 nights a weeks and I understand that after surgery I cannot have it, but what about before? I filled out the paperwork with doctor in February and am assuming that they would have told me if I should not drink wine anymore, but I have "assumed" so much already that I am not quite sure. I know the liver must shrink and I don't think that what I consume would enlarge it, but was curious what your thoughts were on this. I want to be the best I can be for that "miraculous" day that I do have this procedure. Your advise is much appreciated. Hope your weekend was joyous! Cheers! Mare  Drinking Red Wine

cutting back on alcohol pre-surgery would put you in better shape liver- and weight-wise, but you should ask your doc.

Mare- I was very candid about my wine intake with my surgeon and he did not tell me to stop pre-op. Now if I have 1/2 of a glass of white , I am SO DRUNK!!!! BF loves it- I'm a cheap date and a cheaper drunk! LOL! Hope that helps! Sheila

I am a work in progress and I am committed to progress with the work ahead of me.....

LOL Boy, oh boy. Half a glass and drunk? Bah hahahahaha! That is too funny. But it sounds fun.  I like a few glasses now, but post op I might be better off just sniffing the cork! Hee Thanks Sheila! Mare

Woo hoo... cheap drunk for sure!  lol!  Me too!!!!!!   lol!!!  Ok, seriously...  I think your doc would have told you to stop if he thought there would be a problem.  Doesn't sound like you drink much, but I'd call just to make sure.

Mare -  I think that as long as your not drunk walking into the hospital the morning of your surgery you'll be A.O.K!  LOL!                                                drunk.gif drunk? image by alliecat209

I'm forced to admit I'm now a cheap date too.  Two beers and I'm really done...any more than that and it's just a waste really...I've experimented once or twice.

If your surgeon requires a liquid diet pre-op... or some sort of special pre-op diet that will take care of your liver. Many things contribute to our livers being enlarged... mostly high calorie, high fat diets is what really do it! Keep in mind not everybody has a large liver... its just the majority of overweight people do. I had a liver ultrasound pre-op (not surgery related) and my liver was of a normal size. Defiantely bring it up with the surgeon... I am sure they will say they would 'like' or 'prefer' for you to not drink but they should give you a definate time to stop... a few glasses here and there are not a big deal!
