I've got a date - scared and have a question! - All ALONE!

Ok - they've given me a date for my revision and I realize that it's much riskier than initial surgery - so I'm kind of scared. Has anyone else not had anyone to go with them to the hospital?  I'm having surgery 4 hours from home.  My two daughters that are old enough to drive are away at college and will not be able to come.  My youngest daughter is going to stay with Grandmom, but Grandmom is not well enough to make the drive.  So I will be all alone in a strange city.  I'm thinking about staying there for a week or so after the surgery (in a hotel) so that I am close by the hospital and surgeon in case anything happens (leak, etc.) since there is no physician near here that I could go to if I get into trouble.  Do you all think that will be okay - or am I likely to get really lonely.  He is hoping to do it laparoscopically and if I stay at the hotel for a week, I should be able to get staples out and drive home.  However, if he has to open me up - I am going to be trapped there.\ Has anyone recuperated from lap or open RNY all alone?

Who is your Dr for the revision and in what city? Maybe folks here from OH can offer support as your recover in the local hotel? Good luck and I wish you a speedy recovery! Sheila

I am a work in progress and I am committed to progress with the work ahead of me.....

Does that mean you are planning to drive yourself home a week after surgery? I know that my Dr. and most I know of require that you wait two weeks before you can drive ... you can ride before that, but driving is iffy. I have to confess driving @ about 10 days out and it wasn't a great idea.  I would imagine that when you leave the hospital you will need to have someone take you to the hotel ... a cab, if you don't have a friend/angel to help you. Please talk to your dr and his staff about this ... Just to be sure that you are as safe as possible.

I wish that I were near Winston-Salem. If so, I'd definitely come visit you.

Let's see if we can rally some troops to provide you the moral support you are going to need.

Please stay in touch and let us know how you are doing.

Yes, I'm a little worried about the drive.  I am going to be having my revision in Greenville, North Carolina - so the drive is all the way to Winston-Salem - long way!  I think I can get a ride to the hospital and home, and probably use a cab to get to the hotel - but I think I'm going to be kind of lonely there!

I think we have some Greenville friends here.  Let us see if we can rally some support for your time there.  When is your surgery?

It is Thursday, August 23 at Pitt County Hospital.  Thanks for being so sweet!  I'm scared.  It's a revision so that's always a little scarier!

I'm very sorry to hear your situation. Support is so important. I hope some of our OH family close by will be able to help you through. What a fabulous bunch of people they are.  Probably the only positive thing, as a result of my obesity, was the chance to get to know some of these great people. I'll keep praying for you. (((hugs))) Mare
