I need help...I am RNY please help me. Could you give me some ideas on how to get my 60G's a day. I would prefer to get some high quality protein in my via solid foods. A dream world would be filets and prime rib, but reality is cheese and peanut better.  I do know about the shakes, but the powders taste like sweaty socks would taste (if you could imagine).  My taste buds have morphed. Please help me. I'm over 1 year post op and this is the first nutrional challenge that is creating a big problem. My husband is hovering me and I cannot stand it. I am under alot of stress right now so I cannot do my usual research myself. My husband wants to help, but it's more like he's watch, counting and treating me like i'm 2.  I might just have to kill him and we all don't want that.  I know he loves me, but he likes to control things. I have some RNY complication and their 'staff' is too expensive for me to get protein tips from. Thanks gang.  Jennifer

Jennifer - This is a previous post from Sheila in responce to someone else with problems getting all of their protein in....hope it helps! Post Date: 7/29/07 7:19 pm Topic: RE: I'm struggling here!!!! Donna, I am sorry that you are struggling right now. Couple questions- have you tried Isopure ready-to-drink? They have 40gms of protein and the 20ounce bottles also count as your fluid intake. Do you like milk? I would consider a 6 ounce glass of milk in the morning and maybe a 8ounce glass of LF choc milk at bedtime. This would add 14 ounces of fluid per day and an additional 14 gr of protein ( usually 1 ounce milk =1 gm protein).I also bought the Kraft 2% cheddar cheese pre-packaged in 1 ounce foil- 1 block was 6gms of protein and I had no problems getting 2 of them in a day for extra protein. I also added a scoop of Designer Whey choc. protein to my SF choc pudding mix- so with milk and protein powder, a serving of pudding ( 3ounces )  would have 7-9 gm of protein. For me- I have routinely stayed at 80-85 gms of protein per day ( with my nut. approval) and it makes a HUGE difference in my energy level. I feel very sluugish and letharigic at 60 gms of protein- its hard to get motivated to work out, etc.... Hang in there gurl! You WILL BE a success!!! Sheila

If you are near a Kroger, they've got a yogurt called "Carb Master", it's their store brand.  It's got 1.5 grams of fat, 2 grams of sugar, and 12 grams of protein.  I eat them for breakfast.  The best protein for me is fish.  It' goes down a lot easier than other meats.  Tuna is good, salmon, flounder, orange roughy, stuff like that.  Bear Rock has a Mahi Mahi sandwich that I order without the bun when I'm there.  It's pretty good, goes down well, but I have no idea what the exact protein count is.  Ground Turkey, extra lean, is also a good option.  I made tacos last night with one of those kits and the meat went down easy.  I have a lot of trouble with meat, it's very heavy and often gets caught.  So I value when I find something that works. Finally, a decent source of protein is lowfat chili and refried beans.  You can make your own or buy some from Wendy's/Taco Bell.  The Wendy's small chili is a dollar and feeds me for two meals.  You just can't beat that! Hope some of this helps. Take care. Ellen

Own it all, it's yours!

I find proper planning is the way to get in the protein. Getting a good amount of protein in the morning helps you from playing "catch up" all day. Making sure to eat protein at every meal will help as well... there are many high protein items (chicken, beef, turkey, tuna) that will easily get you to the 60g a day. Cheese and pnut butter are both high in fat so make sure you balance out with low fat protein options as well. If necessary you may need to add in 2 protein snacks a day (soy crisps, string cheese, 2 slices of turkey).

I think that the suggestions you have been getting are great. If you need more support, I found a resource that I'm keeping close if I find I need more nutritional support ... It's a program that's available from barix clinics that's called "On Track" ... You don't have to have had your surgery through their program, to enroll. There is a monthly fee of $99, but with that you get
  • Four 20-minute phone coaching sessions with a Barix nutritionist
  • Feedback on food and exercise logs submitted
  • Four modules with exercises
  • Assistance in setting up new goals each week

Maybe this might be a cost effective way to get some 1:1 support.

I put an unflavored proteni powder in my fat free yogurt (Bi Lo has fat free yogurt in vanilla and coffee at least, under their Southern Foods group).  Also, not all cheese is hi in fact, the Harris Teeter near Tega Cay has some lo fat and fat free cheeses,  shredded, etc.  Also, Walmart on South Tryon has some.  So just because it's dairy, don't think it's all hi fat.  Adding protein powder (even just a little bit) to my foods helps up the protein count.  Adding milk in the am and pm is a great option, too.
