Bad News- Suzanne readmitted

Good Friday afternoon to all. Suzanne called me in tears at 230pm- she failed her follow-up leak test today and has been re-admitted to New Hanover Regional. Her Doc- Dr. Harris had a small area of concern on Wed, so he ordered a repeat test today. The radiologist was certain there was no leak, but with the surgeon's insistence and repeat images, they then did an xray of her drain bag, which held some barium. She is going on high dose IV antibiotics, getting a PIC line for hydration and nutrition and will remain NPO for at minimum , 1 week. She is TOTALLY asymptomatic- feels great, looks good. Its a tiny, minor leak. He DOES NOT plan to operate. He's going to rest her gut/hydrate/cover for potentail infection and allow her body to heal and seal the leak. Suzanne is a little overwhelmed and frustrated, yet she's a trooper. Her wt loss is already approx 18lbs and I assured her she will have huge loses while in the hospital. I credit her doctor for following his gut ( I know- really bad pun!) and being hyper vigilent reg. the possibility of a leak. She is in very good hands. If anyone locally wants to visit or call- send me a PM and I'll give you further info. We both believe in the power of prayer, so all prayers and well wished needed during this hospitalization! Wow, I hate Suzanne had to go back in but it's good her Dr stayed with her case so closely.  I hope the time passes fast for her.  I will keep her in my thoughts and prayers.  If anyone from the board gets to the hosp to see her let her know she has a bunch of folks thinking about her. Jaime

I spoke with Suzanne yesterday morning. She told me that she may have a leak, but she felt pretty good and wasn't too concerned. I am so sorry to hear that she is back in, but glad that Dr. Harris insisted on absolute certainty. I'm sure no one is happier than her. Being back in the hospital sucks, but it sure beats what may have happened if no one was paying attention. Of course, thoughts and prayers are with her. I'll give her a call tomorrow and try to lift her spirits. She seems like a tough lady. I expect her to come through this with flying colors. Thank you, Sheila, for the update. Mare
