Hello Everyone,  I am new to OH, and live in SC, i hope it is ok to post on the NC board.  I am just beginning the process towards having the surgery.  I am going to have the gastric bypass.  I was wondering if anyone has Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC  as their insurance.  If you do I am curious about how long it  took you to get approved, and what all you had to do.  I finally decided to have the surgery, and am so excited about it,   I want to thank everyone on this site for being so nice and friendly, this site has eased my fears, and made me realize that I am not alone. THANKYOU to all of you beautiful people. Hugs-

I have State BCBS.  I am sure that there are differences between the policies.  I used to work in insurance at our local hospital.  Sometimes your employer sets limits and exclusions.  My first suggestion would be to call your customer service department and see if WLS is covered and what hoops you have to jump through to get it done.   With State BCBS I had to document weight history for the past 5 years, have a psych evaluation, a fitness evaluation and a nutrition evaluation.  It was pretty easy to get approved.  It took one day.  But I think I am a rareity on that front.  I was told the usual wait time is 3 weeks.   Hope this helps.

Hi Esther -

Of course you are welcome to post here. Welcome to the NC forum and please feel free to ask questions and share your experiences. We all learn from each other through our questions and shared experience.

I look forward to seeing you on the board.

P.S. I don't have experience w/BCBSNC, mine was UHC.

I have BCBS PPO and I had to go through a battery of tests, 5 year weigh history,  and psychological exam.  When all was said and done, the approval process was very easy.  My information was sent in on a Friday and my Dr.'s office called me Monday morning with an approval.  My experience with them was relatively easy (knock on wood).

I have BCBS PPO... they required 5 year weight history... of those 5 years you had to meet a BMI of 35+ w/comorbs or 40+ without... they required a psych and nutritional eval... anything above that would be what your surgeon would require (I had no other testing besides bloodwork). I did not meet the requirements and was denied 3 times before getting approved... took me 4 months of denials and appeals. You can read more about it on my profile :-)

First visit to surgeon - 288 ~ bmi 45.1
2 week pre-op 252 ~ bmi 39.5
Total lost - 153 Since surgery - 117!
Goal weight - 155 (mine) 180 (surgeons)
Current weight - 135 (2020 I lost 10lbs due to dedicating myself to working out more and being in better shape)

1/14/2025 still maintaining 135 :-)

Extended TT, lipo, fat injections - 11/2011

BA/BL/Arm Lift - 7/2014

Scar revision on arms - 3/2015
