Nutritional Support before and after

I assume that different surgeons require different types of nutritional support in the two weeks prior and after surgery. I was curious what others are having to drink. I've just completed my day 11 of 4 slim fast high proteins a day.  Post op I'll be using a new product called Optisource.  The slim fast I've quite enjoyed. The Optisource on the other hand doesn't sound as promising. For starters the post op formula only comes in Strawberry and Caramel . What on Earth possess a company to produce a product in only those two flavors I have no idea. I haven't tasted it just yet, but since I don't really have a choice in the matter I'll just wait until I have to have it to taste it.  I'm currious what others will do or have done.  Hope everyone has had a good weekend. :)

For the first 7 days, I have been on a clear liquid diet.  Hydration has been my goal.  Protein was secondary this week.  I am not allowed to have Slim Fast because it either has too many carbs, sugar, fat or whatever.  My doc just does not allow it.  He has two nutritionists onsite and they work with you to really cover what is good and what is not good.  I even have a detailed handbook to guide me if I forget.   This week I can go back to full liquids, which is what I was on the two weeks before surgery.   Next week I can move on to pureed foods.   And I would certainly have to opt for strawberry over caramel.  Gross.

I didn't have to do a special pre-op diet, with the exception of making it a higher protien, low carb/fat diet.

Post surgery I was on clear liquids w/protien based drinks for 3 weeks. Since then I've been on a soft foods diet. For our program that really means anything that is fork tender ... of course, no more than 1/2 cup at a time, at least 2 ounces protien, low fat/sugar. Honestly, I rarely get very far beyond the protien. (BTW, I'm 6 wks post op tomorrow.)

I hope that helps.

For the first 2 weeks post-op I had to drink 3 protein shakes a day... low carb and low sugar... I used BioChems 100% whey protein mixed with light soy milk... the protein came in vanilla/choco/natural... I used vanilla and would mix with either choco or vanilla soy milk. Strawberry and Carmel are strange flavors... where the heck is vanilla and choco? Strange... at least its only 2 weeks of your life.... Im sure you will never want strawberry or carmel flavored anything again!!!
