Gastric Bypass and "Singleness"

Well, I see Dr. Chapman next Thursday and then my stuff goes to insurance.  In the meantime, my best friend who is normally my caregiver after surgery just got diagnosed with breast cancer.  Of course, her surgery is the priority.

We just found out today though that it does involve one lymph node (and unsure until surgery in 2 wks. if there are more) so that mean chemo and radiation.

How did those of you being single handle being at home by yourself?  I don't have any family here and my best friend is married, but she has always been great to me when I have had surgery.

Would be very interested in others experiences.  Thanks.

First off, I'm so sorry to hear about your friend.  I hope everything turns out well for her and I will keep her in my thoughts and prayers. I'm would think that you will be able to handle it just fine on your own after surgery.  Just don't overdo anything for the first week or two.  My advice would be to have things in your kitchen at counter level and make sure you have all the clean laundry you will need for the first couple of weeks as you probably won't be able to bend and stretch for a while.  Just take it slow and easy and rest alot!  Good luck to you!

Hugs, Donna

I had surgery on a Tuesday, my father came up the Sunday before and left a week later... I was out of the hospital on Thursday.. needed him there Thurs, Fri and Sat to drive me around and help me with laundry and stuff... by Sunday I couldnt wait for him to leave!! I would suggest having somebody at least stay the night with you the first night you are home to make sure all is well... after that you cant drive on pain meds so as long as you have somebody to drive you around you should be good!

i had surgery on weds and was home on friday morning. i had 2 friends come in from out of state "just in case" and to watch my kids while i was at the hospital. it was nice to hang out with them, but they didn't really do anything. they left on monday and i went back to work. i was home with my 2 kids from there on out. i never got the pain Rx's filled, so i felt fine to drive that week.  i wanted the back up for my kids and just in case everything didn't go well. other than that, it's totally do-able without live-in assistance. you can do it.

LOL, I'll let you know!  I have been on my own for the past 12 years so have this real bad independent streak.  Nonetheless, even though I have no intention of using any pain meds, I will get the prescription filled and have arranged to have a friend drive me to and from the hospital and stay with me for a few days post-op.  Asking for that favor took a LOT of courage for me!  MUCH too stubborn and proud to ask for help!  I'll let you know what it was like...
