It hurts to drink...

I called Janell this morning because it hurts so bad to drink. I feel like I have to burp but can't. I only got in 16 oz. yestereday. She said I could get some Gas-X  I'll let ya know if it helps. I've been able to get 18 oz so far today. I never dreamed it would be this difficult to drink. Does this happen to everybody?

Pre-op so I don't have a clue! Just wanted to say hang in there and it will get better. Does the walking seem to help? I read someone say they felt like a 'bloated ballon' from the surgery for a week or so. Hope it passes quickly. Glad to see you warming that bench. Feel better. Hugs.

Ooh, ooh, me, me, me!   It has been difficult to get my liquids in (I've done it, but it's been hard) since the beginning.  I learned not to drink cold water based drinks, but it was only yesterday (six and half weeks out) that I figured out I should use *warm* water to make my wal-mart crystal light.  I know it doesn't sound good, but try it.  I got in 96 oz yesterday by using warm water!!!!!!   I really like the orange one (early morning, or early rise, or some such - kinda like tang).  Thanks to those who have posted previously about warm tea, that's where the idea came from!

I'm sorry you are hurting, Jenn, but I want to thank you for sharing that with us pre-ops who want to know what we can expect.  Hope it goes away soon. Hugs, Suzanne

Hey Jennifer -

I know that I had RNY instead of the band, but I found it difficult in the beginning as well. Probably because of the swelling. As time went by, it's gotten much easier. While I certainly can't "chug-a-lug", I can swallow without hurting anymore. One of the things that worked for me, was having ice chips. I would put them into my mouth, let the ice melt and the temp warm to body temp before swallowing. I constantly had ice in my mouth and that really helped.

I am sure it will get better with time.

Thinking of you,

Barb

Do you think it would help if you tried ice chips instead of straigh****er?  It may go down a little bit easier.

I'd say your too new post op, you need to call your dr's office again. There could be a stricture or ulcer.  Call the dr if you haven't already.

I'm glad to hear it isn't abnormal. Barb, I also had RNY and not the band. Maybe it is the swelling. I do feel some better this afternoon. I took 2 gas-x chewables and 30 cc's of hydrocodone w/tylenol and WHEW WEEEE!!!!!!! I'm lovin' life, lol. So I'm not sure if it was the gas-x or the pain meds...I'll keep ya posted. So far I'm at 25 oz. today.  Sarah~I will try to call you tonight or tomorrow. Wendy said you tried to call but the MORPHINE got the best of me. Anyway, love you guys. Thanks for all the advice. Jennifer
