Warning - Dr. Moran was not upfront
okay, my two cents----- my BMI was 47.5 when I started the journey, I spent over $3,000 before my insurance said " NO , we will not cover the gastric by pass it is too dangerious" I was crushed, to think they make the call on our health even when a doctor has said " she will have a heartattack anyday " ,,,, the insurance excutives made the decision they thought for me. Well I did have my surgery as a self pay and I am in debit for it for the next 3 years and it is tough but worth every penny.
I personally think this surgery is for the people that are truly morbity obese with a high BMI , there must be a set rule on the BMI's . On the other hand it should be said upfront ---- Insurance companys make the final call, and if you do not have a high BMI your chances are low at getting the surgery approved.
I am really sorry you was turned down and the money you spent out of pocket, but after spending almost $ 30,000 --- and having a BMI of 47.5 , count your lucky stars.
Karen,
My honest advice to you is to appeal! Dr. Moran's office should be your advocate at this point and direct you on what you can do to appeal BCBS's decision. You need to be the squeeky wheel like Wendy! We can take a road trip to BCBS in Durham and picket outside the building!
Hang in there!
