I was required to walk 20-30 minutes every day after getting out of the hospital. I got out of the hospital on a Thursday - worked 3 hours at my p/t job Saturday and went back to my f/t job on Monday. My surgeon pretty said just do what you are comfortable with and dont push yourself too much.

That's interesting, Jennifer, because I was just wondering if I could join my sister on a 2 day mini-vacation to the Asheville area on the 28th with my surgery being the 24th.  It would involve my driving about 4 hours though.  What are your thoughts? Thanks, Suzanne

I was not allowed to drive for two weeks post-op.  They were very clear on that one.  I was allowed to walk as much as I could tolerate, but not drive.  I would think, with RNY, that you are probably not going to be up to a 2 day trip 4 days out, I wasn't anyway. Take care. Ellen

Thank you Ellen.  You know, I thought about it after I posted that entry and realized I was probably pushing it too much.  Not unusual for me.  Thanks for your reply. Suzanne

The first week post-op I had to walk for 5 minutes every hour of sitting... so I would say each hour in the car you would have to stop and get out and walk... it reduces the risk of blood clots. I wasnt allowed to drive until I was off pain meds (which I didnt need after the surgery). I will say this... keep in mind you will be extremely exhausted after surgery and want to take lots of naps :-) you will also have to be very focused on getting in your water/protein so make sure you keep that in mind when planning the trip! The day after I got out of the hospital my dad took me to WalMart... its 1 mile from my house... we walked around the store to grab a few things and I was *exhausted* after we left... it was maybe a 1/2 hour trip in total... had to sleep a good 4 hours after that! Of course check with your surgeon about all this first :-)

Thank you Jennifer.  I think I will pass on this trip and take her up on another one.  I have a tendency to over do and I don't want to do anything to spoil this experience! Thanks again, Suzanne

My doctor would be very upset if I wasn't walking.  You shouldn't be walking alone, but you should be walking.  He told me to get up every hour that I was awake and walk as much as I could tolerate.  There is no reason why you shouldn't be able to walk around outside.  Resting is good, but you need to move to speed your healing and more importantly, to avoid blood clots in your legs. They are just caring about you, but it sounds like they need a little education about post-op procedures.  Keep moving, it'll do you good. Take care. Ellen
