It is really going to happen!

Ok, so I am an admitted coinsure of a nice bottle of wine, a fabulous margarita (on the rocks AND frozen) and of course my warm winter Irish Coffees and/or Bailey's in my java in the winter.  There has been a lot of conversation about drinks recently.  My question is, Dr. Mitchell advises his patients to NEVER drink alcohol again because of "absorption and the instant liver damage."  I signed up for his program so I feel that I also need to follow his lead on this. But...What is everyone else's surgeon saying about this?  Is it a never thing or a once in a while 1/2 of a glass thing?  I am very interested in other perspectives on this.

My doctor also said it is a big no no. Apparantly it doesn't take much to get intoxicated after RNY. I also have heard a great deal about people substituting one addiction for another. So some people become alcoholics, shopaholics, gamblers, etc. I guess it can happen. Hopefully not too often. I have heard Carnie Wilson say she is an alcoholic and beacme one after WLS. Luckily, I am not a drinker but boy I love to shop as it is. I am in big trouble if it escalates after surgery.....lol.  Lisa

Candice, I just had my pre-op appointment today and was given a packet of info whi*****luded some after surgery instructions from my surgeon.  They covered alcohol intake after surgery and my surgeon says it is best if we never drink alcohol although he does say that limiting it to very special occasions is acceptable after we are say 12 months or so out of surgery.  It is very hard on our liver since we absorb it so much faster and based on this, they say to limit it to the following if we decide to have it at all: a small serving of wine - 4 ounces, a small serving of liquor - 2 ounces and beer should be limited to no more than 12 ounces.  Again, he strongly suggests that we DON'T have it at all. I enjoy an occasional mixed drink when my husband and I go out to dinner sometimes so I know that I will miss that but I think I will be too afraid of messing up my newly rearranged insides to even try it for a very long time, if ever!   Anyway, I know every surgeon is different but I thought I'd share what I learned from my visit today. Donna
