Introducing myself

Hi everyone. I have been lurking and reading about everyones weight loss journey and decided it was time to introduce myself.  I am 33 and have 3 daughters (14-10-2). I am near Winston Salem. The stories and before/after pics here are very inspiring. I hope to do more research on lap band and eventually start the process to joining the guys on the losers bench. I have hypothyroidism and that has contributed to my weight gain over the last few years. I started out with hyperthyroidism and when the drs tried to fix it they ended up fixing it too much and now its low.  I take meds everyday for it and was just wondering if anyone here has had this problem and still went through with WLS? TIA! Nena

Hi Tia, I haven't had to deal with Hypothyroidism, but I just wanted to welcome you to OH.  If there's ever anything I can help you with just ask. Joe

Tia -

Welcome to our little piece of the world. You might want post your question re: hyperthyroidism on the main board ... just because it's a much bigger pond to cast your net in.

I think that you will find that people are very open and willing to talk to you and answer questions.

I'm not sure where you are located, but there are support groups that are available in many areas ... If you live in driving distance of the Triangle, we have a support group that just started up.

Again, welcome and be sure to ask questions and give advise!

All the best,

Barb

Hey there Nena!

Welcome to our little corner of OH. I didn't have thyroid issues though I often wished I did so I would have an excuse to be fat. I know....that's a horrible thing to think, just like I wish I could have anorexia for a few months. I'm just being honest. I was a sad, desperate soul. I'm really sorry you have the thyroid trouble. You may find the surgery will make it more manageable or eliminate it. There are soooo many medical conditions that leave us post-op. Of course, I know nothing about it but that would be a great bonus for you.

You can also search on the boards and it will find you past post and comments of the subject.

Again, welcome and best wishes for your journey.

Karen

Hey tthere!!  Welcome to the NC Board!  I saw your posting and thought that I needed to respond.  I have had hypothyroidism for 7 years now and have only gotten it under control within the last two years.   I am certain that this(along with lifestyle) has contributed to my weightgain over the years.  Basically, just like every other health concern for bariatrics, as long as you are being treated and your TSH readings are good and in the middle of the range (take your Synthroid or Lovoxyl) you should be fine.  I am not sure it will impact the after surgery but Dr. M has no concerns.  Let me know if you want to talk about this more.  Candice

Welcome Nena. Good luck in your journey. There are alot of people that are so knowlegable about WLS. I am not sure about the hyperthyroidism but I don't think that will be a road block.  Jennifer

Thank you all very much for the warm welcomes. I will continue reading up on WLS and eventually talk with my PCP. I did call my insurance yesterday to see how much they covered for this surgery and I will pay 20%.  I need to start saving money! Thanks again! Nena

Welcome to the NC board.  Do you know which surgeon you are going to be using?
