Had surgery last Wed...still in pain

I had my surgery last Wed. OMG!!!!  I never imagined I would have so much pain. Wed. and Thurs were pure torture. I had pain, nausea, shortness of breath, chest pain, etc. I was diagnosed with anemia and given 2 units of blood. That made things a lot better.

Coming home has been ok. I have an awesome husband. I also have awesome inlaws who have been keeping my kids. My son is almost 4 and I have another son who is 16 months. The 16 month old of course does not understand, only wants mama, and misses me.

Ive done well at getting my fluids in. Im not really hungry at all. Ive had some grits and pudding. I added protein to the pudding. Ive also had numerous protein shakes which I must say are the devil.

Ive had some pooping issues which I think are finally starting to get resolved.

I gained back all of my weight lost during the preop in the hospital. Im slowly losing a few pounds. That has been frustrating. Anyone else have that?

Ive also decided that I have thrush. Im calling the doc in the morning. I go for my postop 1 week check on Wed.

I am so sorry you are so miserable!  It will get better!  I actually gained 15 pounds in the hospital because of the IV fluids.  At my two week post op appt, I had only dropped a net of 3 pounds (surgery date weight was 356, left the hospital at 371, two week visit weighed 353.)  At four weeks out, tho, I had lost 20 pounds since surgery.  So yes, the gain does happen, but it also goes away.   Hang in there!

Maybe call and see if they can switch your pain meds to something more effective?

I'm sorry you had such a difficult time.  Walking really helps work the pain out.  If you were done lap, it helps get rid of the gas build up  particularly.  Congratulations on getting a lot of fluids in, it gets easier as the weeks progress.  I didn't gain much fluid from the hospital stay, like I see others have.  I only put on a couple of pounds.  I am not sure why some build up fluid more than others.  I can say that this too shall pass, pardon the pun.  You will lose the fluid.  The same for bowel movements.  I was horribly constipated the first week, but it finally ..... er..... worked itself out. Let us know how it goes, we love to cheer for fellow losers! Take care. Ellen

I will admit I was really lucky and did not feel much discomfort , but I did walk, walk , walk alot, I think It is the most important thing you can do early out. At the point you are, I was only allowed liquid stuff, I never had grits or pudding yet, I am surprised you are able to eat that now.

It does get better, just hang in there,, and yes I gained about 10 pounds in the hospital so I think that is normal, the weight will drop off you so fast it will not be no time before all that wears off ( with lots of walking )

Take care

I agree with everyone that the walking helps.  I  would have my hubby wake me up every hour to walk the house.  Some trips would just be to the bedroom and back to the living room and some trips would be 3 - 4 laps around the whole house.  The main thing it so walk often.  it helps with the gas and it gets blood flowing so everything else can heal faster.  I was on my pain meds for about 2 weeks, but then almost overnight no more pain.  Hang in there things do get better.
