Hi I am new to the board (been lurking around) feel like I already know some of you.  I have been to a lot of the pre- wls to do list and completed much of it.  I have had 3 vertical c-sections and a large multiple hernia repair surgery done in 2001. Dr. thinks I may have some new hernia stuff going on. he is doing research on it but if it is says it will have to be fixed also.I am ok with it being done open. But my question is has any one had wls and hernia repair done at the same time. I dooooo sooooo hope I don't have to have 2 seperate surgeries. I would like one cut and 2 fixes. I was so excited to think I was on the road to loserville but now hit my first road block.

Hi - From what I have seen and heard the surgeon usually will address this type of issue "while he/she is in there" Also, hernia repair is done lap. This is very common.

My problem is there is a lot of mesh used in the repairs and that changes the ball game.  They had to do me open in the repair the first time because of the scaring from the previous c-sections.  It is just my bad luck.   I could uses some prayers that it will work out. I was so excited. I have not given up yet.

Keep you head up and think positive! Whatever your Dr. decides will be in your best interest. It's hard to hear something that throws things off track, believe me I know, but all will come with time. Best wishes and keep us updated!

Thanks for saying hi!  I can't speak for having hernias repaired at the same time, but I had 2 "bikini cut" c-sections and a triple hernia repair straight down the middle of my stomach at the time of surgery.  The surgeon still did it laparoscopically, but he was concerned that he might have to open if the adhesions were particularly bad.  Having said that, he was still done in less than three hours.  I would think that the hernia would be fixed at the same time, it's in the same general location as the opening, right?  He'll be able to tell you more, but I would guess it would be. Good luck with your surgery.  Please keep us posted. Take care. Ellen

Own it all, it's yours!

I know Dr. Pirrello does some hernia repair at the same time he does rny, but each person is different.  Since you had to have some hernia surgery done open (I think I read that right) then you may have to have the rny done open, too.  If so, it may make it easier to have the hernia repaired.  Dr. Bauman will discuss it with you tho.  Good luck!

Hi again!   I just came back from my four week post op appt and Dr. Pirrello said "I'll be damned if I ever leave another hernia unrepaired during surgery!"  So it seems that at least Dr. Bauman's partner is determined to do hernia repairs when doing wls.  I was intrigued to find out, however, that I have a 20% chance of the hernia returning as I loose weight.  If it does return, tho, he believes that it will not strangulate (he used a different word, but that's what it meant).  And, sometimes having a hernia to be repaired helps in getting coverage for a tummy tuck later on.  So I guess we'll see.   Good luck!
