I will be going for my pre-op soon, I just wanted to know if any of you knew first-hand what happens if you've gained weight , and which dates does it go from, ie:  consult to surgery, or pre-op to surgery?  What does he say or do? I've been hearing some say they have to diet because they've gained, and I sure don't want to have to do a crash diet, I rather do it while there's time.

Hello, I am one of Dr. Baumans patients...I had my WLS April 30, 2007....When I first went to my consult I was 243lbs that was back in Jan.2007...I went for my pre-op 1 week before my surgery and I had gained 4lbs...I didnt think it was a big deal but Dr. Bauman an his staff did and they let me know to. The way they see it if you gain weight that means you arent serious about losing weight...They made me feel bad about what I had done in a nice respectful way. Dr. Bauman told me I needed to lose the weight I had gained before my surgery and told me to try drinking Slim Fast.....He also said some time they weigh people before surgery and if you have gained weight they will reschedule it. Needless to say I didnt lose the 4 lbs even though I tried , and I still had my surgery,...but they had me worried. So just try not to gain weight, I know its hard because I tried to taste everything I thought I would miss before my surgery...lol...Good luck to you and I hope this helps!!

nu_bia, Thank you so much, it helps tremendously.  I know I have gained some, I really havent been pigging out, just eating normal, and seriously, I didn't think my date would come this soon, I guess it wasn't a reality then!  I need to weigh myself today and start the slimfast today.  Thank you so much!  ~~~Hugs,  Nancy

Had my surgery with his partner, i did not gain but had lost 2 1/2 lbs 2 weeks before surgery and the bowel prep I lost another 3 lbs, but you weigh less in the am than in the after(in my case anyway) I did the same thing, i tasted everything that i thought i would miss, but with being nervous i did not have much of an appetite, i had small amounts of things. The bowel prep plan on around 1pm tht afternoon and needless to say i stayed on the toliet until that night.

I had surgery with Dr. B in 2005.  I gained 3 lbs between my first visit and my pre-op, I was concerned, but he did not mention it.  I think that they would prefer you lose a few pounds, but as long as you do not gain a significant mount, i don't think they really care.  Good Luck to you.  Dr. B is great ! I haven't had surgery yet, but went for my consult with Dr. Bauman last week.  He specifically told me not to gain weight before I had surgery.  He suggested that I be sure to exercise.  He also mentioned - as I have read on this website - about the liver and not wanting it to be too fatty prior to surgery.  You could always call his office if your concerned.  They seem really nice and willing to help.  I would think (my thinking of course) that if it's just a few pounds it wouldn't be that big of a deal.  I'm sure it happens all the time.  Good luck!

I had Dr. P (Dr. Bauman's partner) and he had specifically asked me to drop 45-50 lbs prior to surgery (to get my BMI down to 60). I did, and after surgery he was REALLY PLEASED about it.  Said it made the surgery much easier and my recuperation would be easier because of it, too.  So far, the only issue I have had was the emergency hernia repair (which was not really related to the rny).  So I would suggest trying to drop some between now and the appt.  Good luck!
