I have been reading these post for some time now and I understand that stalls are normal. But I am just 6 week post op and have not lost any weight for two weeks now. I lost 26 lbs first month and can not seem to get the scales to move again. I drink my fluids, am exercising( not enough I know) and try to eat protein. My doctor did not say any thing about protein shakes just to eat protein, protein , protein. Has anyone else stalled so soon after surg? What can I do to get moving again? I already feel like I will be a failure again with this diet.

Sounds like hibernation. Do a google search on hibernation after WLS. It will be helpful. This will pass.

A plateau is when you do not lose pounds OR inches for 4 weeks or longer. Since the scale isnt moving have you checked your inches? There have been a few times the scale hasnt moved but my pants were falling off from being too large. Ive read many posts where people around 3-6 weeks have a period where the scale doesnt move. Just be patient and the scale will move again... also you are not on a diet... you had surgery to give you a tool that is allowing you to completely change your life and the way you eat!

This is a very common thing. I only lost 2 lbs last week. I had my surgery on March 28, 2007. I feel like my weight loss has slowed down, but that is not uncommon. I still have lost 2 more inches around the belly. So please be patient. When the scale stops, use a tape measure. I figure as long as the scale ain't going up... I am ok. Blessings, Diane

Plateaus are normal, nearly all of us have them. I am in one, sort of, now. It is particularly common in the 3-6 week zone after surgery. One of the posts called it Hibernation. My doctor called it "the blahs." Just be patient and keep doing what your doctor told you to do. Make sure you're getting all of your protein, all of your water, and exercise as much as you can. I am finding exercise a particular challenge these days. I just don't have the energy to do it, or at least it seems that I don't. The reality is that I do. My doctor told me to do what I could, exercise every day, and take small, short naps to help with the fatigue. It does get better, nearly every post I read on this subject tells me that. Be patient, the plateau will end. Take care. ~Ellen

I think we both had Dr. Chapman and had surg about the same time. Did he say anything about protein drinks? He only told me to eat protein and did not tell me to do protein shakes? Everyone keeps talkin about the shakes.

They discourage protein shakes there. They feel that you don't get full enough or stay full with them. I bought the protein bullets, and use them as a snack. It's 3 oz of liquid, 25 grams of protein. They're pricey, but I can stomach them better than the shakes. It's very important to get your protein in, one way or another.

Cinderellen, I just remembered they told me when I had my surgery that the fatigue would has the longest. I remember it being about 4 months before I felt releif from the fatigue. Your body is working really hard losing weight. The first six months are the primere time to lose weight too, as it slows down after 6 months. There is also a the changes of eating carbs after surgery. Every dr's plan is different but carbs will impact the pace at which you will loose. I know protien makes you heal, when i had complications from my surgery they told me to beef up the protein. I finally was getting my energy level back up and bamm another surgery. It's normal. Jen

Hi Ellen... I just had my 2 week check up today and drum roll... 16 pounds gone!!!! They told me today that they want 90% of my food intake to be protein... but with what they gave me on the list... not sure I am going to get it in... I am going to get real tired of eggs and peanut butter real soon... lol but hey... I am going to do what I am told to do to the best of my abilities.... Take care Nelle

Congratulations on your 16 pounds Nelle! The soft food diet isn't as bad as it sounds. I was just so stinking glad to get off of the Boost/Ensure that I didn't care. Eggs were okay the first few times I had them, but now they bother me. I liked cottage cheese, string cheese, cheese cubes, peanut butter, and yogurt with some unflavored protein added to it. Good luck with the soft foods. Take care. ~Ellen
