Need some advise
This may sound stupid but how do you research the different surgeons? I know that you go to the seminars, look them up online, and testimonials. What else can I do? I want to make sure I explore all options.
I hear alot of good things about alot of surgeons. What are some ways in which helped you make your decisions?
Your Icon is cracking me up. I cannot stop looking at it.
My advice was to ask around. I wanted Lap Band and there were only 2 doc's at the time that did it. One of the docs was going through a process of opening his own clinic so I resorted to the other one.
After the process, I decided to go with RNY, I realized the band would just stress me out and I'm not good with follow ups and committments. Plus the costs of the fills had me worried. I was uncertain of my decision right up until I was put out for surgery.
I put up a strong face and never told anyone I was scared. I woke up after surgery and felt great. I had no complications post op and I had a great surgeon. I would narrow down to 2-3 surgeons, attend their 'FREE" seminars, don't pay to hear them talk, ask around, talk with others who've had the surgery, etc.
I personally would rethink my path now, it's done and over with and I"m happy, however, I didn't care for the way the care was delivered when I had a complication.
I know part of the choice was mine, I'll just say, baratric surgery is some serious stuff and make sure you really chose the best surgeon to fit your needs when you might not be at your best. I hope this helps and I'm trying to be objective.
I can email you my 'opinions' privately if you'd like. Good Luck wiht your journey.
I researched a lot of different surgeons by attending their seminars, online research and talking to folks here. I chose Dr. Timothy Farrell of UNC Chapel Hill for several reasons. I was very impressed with Dr. Farrell. He is kind, caring and a humble man. As a surgeon his reputation is impeccible. He has an ongoing structured after care program. He uses the ICV tulip filter to prevent pulmonary embolisms and requires a full cat scan before it is removed. This will save your life. The psych eval didn't include some crazy 250 question personality test, which I was to be charged an additional $200 to take; required by Dr. Bauman in Concord. Then there is each surgeon's non refundable, non reimbursable fees. Dr. Mitchell charged $500, Dr. Bauman $250, and Dr. Farrell only charges $150. His staff is wonderful and I love going to the monthly support group meetings. The real bonus came when I realized that the hospital is less than 20 miles down Hwy 54 and I live right off of Hwy 54. UNC Chapel Hill is a teaching hospital, so all day long there were students there caring for me as if I had a private nurse! I was assigned a wonderful young lady who was a senior nursing student. I had a private room and was well cared for. It was a bonus I hadn't expected. Many blessings on your journey.
