Stacy, Try the califlower like the other posters said to replace the potatos. I actually have a recipe for "you will think it is potato salad" made from califlower. Very Yummy! Let me know if you would like it. As for the soft drinks, I have not wanted one at all since surgery. My Dr said that you can have them (diet, decalf) in moderation as long as you have let it go flat. I let a little cup go flat over the weekend just to try out some diet pepsi and it was way too sweet. I only took a sip and decided that I don't care if I every have it again. Now for what I do drink- Declaf iced tea sweetend with Splenda, crystal light and I love pain old H2O with a fresh lemon slice. You will find that you will still miss things, but my doc says don't deprive yourself. I know I wanted a dorito about 2 weeks out - I knew that my pouch wasn't ready for it, but I had to have a tase, so I licked it and I haven't wanted any since. You will figure it out and this site helps sooooo much. Take Care, Darla

Congrats. You will be fine without the potatos. YOu might want to kick all soda's diet and regular in an effort to increase your water intake. I"m a year out and I still have a problem with over filling my plate. I can still eat a bit, but no where near before. 1 meal out can equal 3 if I could tolerate that much left over. You will quickly learn that you can live without things. Once you see the weight melting off. After surgery some foods will make you sick and feel uncomfortable if you eat them, so this will encourage you to adhere too. Good Luck. Jennifer

Hey Stacy, I know how you feel, I love my Coke but havent had any since my surgery in Jan. I MISS IT SO MUCH! at work I have to watch everyone sit there having their COKE and Im drinking my WATER. I tried crystal light but I cant stomach it, and believe me I tried every flavor out there but just cant stand the taste. I try to stay away from carbs but its hard for me also so I dont have them very often. Im not big on sweets myself so thats a good thing for us. I know my surgeon told me I can never have a soft drink ever again even diet but Ive heard of people drinking it anyway. I havent tried it yet because Im so afraid of getting sick so I try to stick to my water as boring as it gets Well good luck Im sure you will do great! Denise

i had my surgery 8.2005 and still eat potatoes. i eat them in moderation. i even eat french fries but like i say in moderation. bake potatoes and sweet potatoes are a good choice. eat your protein first and then savor a few bites. you'll be surprised by how quickly you get full!!! the surgery is a blessing and allows us to eat normally.....skinny people eat potatoes but not big huge stuffed ones!!!! after surgery i put plain protein powder in mashed potatoes...soft and protein....it went down fairly easily. don't worry about missing foods. we do go through a transition period. i was soooo worried and almost ate 1/2 a cake from my favorate bakery prior to surgery. i really do not miss foods. i am not hungry so it makes it easy. if i do crave i eat whatever i want. i eat slowly and then i'm full before i eat too much. you'll do great!!! goodluck do work on getting hobbies (if you don't have any) we need things to take the place of food. i tend to use exercise....works well. we all need something that makes us feel good afterwards besides food. susan
