Hi Joanna, Welcome to our forum! I went with UNC Chapel Hill and they were not only wonderful, but in network for me as well. If you don't get any responses here, try the main board, alot of NC folks post there. Best wishes on your journey! Blessings, Diane

Hey Joanna, Dr Cox will be doing my surgery on 4/25. So far Dr Cox and the office staff have been great. Always willing to answer any questions. I've had no complaints with them at all. Have you been to their forum web site? http://www.hickorysurgical.com/forums/ Joy

http://www.hickorysurgical.com/forums/ No I had not been to that site, thank you Joy, that's the kind of reading I want to do - what to expect from these doctors/staff, etc. Holly and Joy, my first visit (an education class with my husband) is scheduled May 2, my physical and psych are coming up this week. I've spent a lot of time completing the paperwork. I'm approx 100lbs overweight and I'm losing the long battle with Type II Diabetes. I have Cigna ins and these Docs/Frye are "in-network." Dr. Cook recently performed a Lap-Band on a gal here in Boone, and she isn't having any trouble at all. She goes for her first saline this week. I'll start studying the hickorysurgical/forums. Joanna

Joanna, Hi! I am your "neighbor"....I am in Ashe County! I had RNY with Dr. Cox 11/7/06 and have had NO complications. The entire staff there is excellent. All the girls "downstairs" where you go for educational classes and at each dr. visit to be weighed as well as all the nurses and staff in the dr.'s office are super. Everybody is really nice and helpful. I am down 70 lbs, with only 26 to go to reach goal!!! Dr. Cox is wonderful, very friendly and a good dr. I would be glad to talk to you if you want. Joanna, I live in Grante Falls and Dr. Cook did my surgery 8/24/06. Like everyone else, I just can't say enough good things about Dr. Cook, Dr. Cox, and everyone in the SWL office. They are all wonderful. I have not had any problems since my surgery. I am almost 8 months out and I have lost 115 pounds and gone from a size 34 to a size 22. I can honestly say I would do this surgery over a hundred times. I haven't had any regrets. If you would like the ask any questions, feel free to email me at [email protected] Chris

Dr. Cook did my surgery on 12/30/05 and all I can say is wonderful things about him. He gave me a new lease on life! He has been wonderful to me. I had several problems and he was there for me every step of the way! Dr. Cox is also an excellent doctor. After I went to Dr. Cook, I decided to look no further. He is the BEST!!! Wendy

Thanks so much for all your replies. So all of y'all had RNY with Drs Cook & Cox and not Lap-Band? I was considering Lap-Band because the surgery was less invasive and your body could absorb vitamins and minerals better. I am 50 yrs old, approx 100lbs overweight, and losing the long, long war with Type II Diabetes. Y'all are making me feel really confident about these docs/staff and Frye. Of course, I want vastly improved health and I want to wear hiphugging jeans with a BELT! Joanna in Boone

I really don't know that much about the Lap-Band. When I went for one of my check ups with Dr. Cook, he did tell me that it wasn't for everybody. When you say the surgery is less invasive, yes, to a point it is, but from what I've been told and seen from people who have lapband they make the exact same incisions. So, the only difference would be the way they reroute the intestines and create a new pouch. I'm just leary of the lap band. I don't know why, just am. But, it's your personal decision. I chose RNY and I'll be honest, had a rough first year. But, I'm 15 months out and am doing great. Still have a problem getting all the protein in, but I'm working on it. I think you are doing right by chosing Hickory Surgical. Email me if you'd like to talk. Good luck! Wendy
