Buying the Bathroom Scale

Do you own a scale? I do not. I've always hated the scaled for the horrible truth it told. Now that my surgery is a reality and fast approaching I am rethinking owning one. What has your experience been? I think it would be alot more fun to go to the doctor's office and discover I've lost 20 lbs, then say stepping on the scale 5 times a day and searching for a 1/2 lb lost. I am eager to hear your views and feedback here. As always your comments are most appreciated! Blessings, Diane

oh Honey, you need a scale in your bathroom.... When I started my journey , every single day, I wrote in my calendar my weight,,, for months I watched the pounds go down ,,,, Now at almost a year out , I look at last years calendar and I can see every days weight, it is such a joy to have the info . Now I only get on the scale every few days, but I think it keeps us in line, remember you can gain weight if you start the bad eating habits. My Vote : Get a Scale, write down your daily weight.

I agree. I do need to monitor my weight closely. Didn't think of it from a health viewpoint. thanks! Diane

My vote is NO. I have a scale and have found out that I want to get on it everyday and if hasn't moved like I thought it worries me. I do much better when I only get on it just every so often like once every 2 weeks. It keeps me from getting frustrated. I had to have my husband lock my scales up in the out door storage and get them out for me every so often. Just how it is for me. Shannon

I'm sorta middle of the road on this issue. I did go out a few months ago and buy a scale that shows weight by the pounds and ounces and body fat something or other (I haven't really took the time to figure that one out yet!). I do find myself getting on it about every day or at least every other day right now and I haven't had surgery yet. I am desperately trying not to gain any more weight before I have surgery so I do get a little paranoid if I step on it and I have gained any at all -- especially if I've been good the day before (I weigh first thing in the morning) with my eating and drinking all my water. So I figure if I do that now, I probably will be worse after surgery! Although, I must say, I really like A.D.'s idea about writing the weight daily on a calendar. Hadn't really thought of doing that till now. But I don't think I would be able to wait 2-3 weeks or longer to find out from the doctor's office how much I weighed. I'm too impatient!.

My experience: I own a scale and it was fun after surgery to watch the weight do down every day!! Wow!! How exciting. Then I hit a stall. The scale became discouraging. I was smart enough to take measurements and was at least encouraged to see inches lost even though my weight stalled. The scale proved too tempting in the bathroom. Now, I weigh on Friday and my husband takes my measurements. (Adds a little spice to our lives!! At our age we take it anyway we get it!!) Then he puts the scale away from me until the next Friday. This plan works for me. Diane B.

I have several. I much prefer the Tanita line because you can get a model that measures body fat also. That way even if you didnt lose any weight you may still see progress in that your total body fat percentage went down. Unfortunately the model I have "tilts" if I weighed more than 300 pounds, so I had to get another scale that went up to 350 and even that one became obsolete at one point. I guess now that my weight is below 300 I should get it out of the closet. I would suggest you weigh just once per day in the mornings before eating or drinking anything. This will give you an accurate assessment of the effects of the foods and drinks you consumed the day before. For instance I generally dont eat a lot of salty foods but when I ate certain foods, my weight would go up even though I hadnt eaten much. The scale is just a tool, much like your surgical procedure is just a tool. Both should be used correctly to help you lose weight.

I have one, got it at Sam's. It goes to 400 pounds, but I find that anything over 350 is a little skewed. Still it shows the same amount of weight loss as the doctor's office does, so it must be okay. Anyway, I agree that it's fun to watch the weight fall. I'm on an 800 calorie diet right now in preparation for surgery, and am having a good time watching the weight drop. However, if at any point you become a slave to your scale, letting it control you or get you down..... Toss it! Or store it, whatever works. Take care. ~Ellen

I don't own a scale at home. But, at work there is one in my office. I have to use it to measure the head start children. And everybody at work comes back to my office to weigh themselves. To tell the truth, there is an digital one, but I am too heavy to weigh myself on it. It says ERROR. I'm like "yeah I know". But when I am on one of my hundreds of diets, I wind up weighing myself everyday. That gets me really depressed. I hate weighing myself. I can't wait til the day when I can actually look forward to getting on the scale.
