It sort of depends on where you have it done, who does it, and whether it's Lap or Open. I have seen a range from 20,000 to 40,000+ dollars depending on those variables. UVA was in the 40's when I was there. ~Ellen

It really depends on your insurance company. For me, the surgery is covered with my plan, but I have to meet a 1000.00 deductible before they will pay at 80/20 and my maximum costs are going to be an additional 3000.00, and then the plan will pay at 100%. I spoke to the financial person at the hospital and she told me that the prices on the Carolina Weight Loss Surgery site of 16000 for RNY and 14000 for the lap band are the quoted prices for private pay patients. She also told me that my charges would be 20,000+ for the surgery, doesn't make sense to me, I talked to the insurance company yesterday and was told that Northeast is a plan participant with Cigna and that they should discount the surgery. I don't know. I do know that you will have to pay what the insurance won't pay up front to Dr. Pirello's office to meet your deductible and then the hospital will ask that you pay the maximum remainder of out of pocket expense to them prior to surgery, because it is elective and the lady told me that they had to implement this rule because people would have surgery and then not pay the hospital their part. Hope this helps, good luck. Angie

My cost to the surgeon was $5005 for pre-op orders visit and the surgery. This is what they bill to private patients and to insurance. The hospital discounted my surgery (lap RNY with band) to $16,000 because I was self-pay and this was paid up front. I did receive a copy of the itemized bill which totalled just under $20,000 but that will be different for every person and every stay. The full amount of the anesthesia bill was around $1500 but this was discounted to around $1150 prior to surgery, again because I was self pay. So, my total surgery would have been $26,505, but because I was self-pay, it was discounted to $22,155 out of pocket, paid in advance. From what I've heard from others who were covered under insurance, you can expect to pay whatever your out of pocket maximum would be for the year (on your insurance card), then maybe even a couple hundred dollars of surprises here and there. Also, if you are using Dr. Bauman, they let you know up front how much you have to pay everyone when they schedule your surgery. Hope this helps! ...Jill

I had lap RNY... Mine cost around 35,000 when all is said and done. My insurence is picking up alot of that, but that is what the surgeon, hospital and anastesiologist billed me for. Goos luck! Kristi
