Depends on the doc...som require a 2 week liquid diet others will give a good cleaning a day before surgery. It's all up the surgeon and what they ask you to do. I had the great experenice of going into to watch a surgery in the OR and now that I have seen just how the liver really is right on top of your stomach, I preach the loss weight before surgery to help shrink that liver. It was truly amazing to see it done and to see how they have to move it and stuff. So even if your doc doesn't require it...try to loss some weight to help them out.

It depends on your dr/surgeon. I had my surgery with Duke and they did not require a 2 week liquid diet. BUT they do want you to change you dite to low fat, low sugar, low carb. Besides it makes the surgery alot more safe for you. And it also makes the transition for your eating alot better. Stephanie

I just had my surgery w/Duke on 02/15 and the only thing they required is the day before surgery a clear liquid diet, not 2 weeks. They wanted us to start the week before to eat more protein, less fats , etc to help shrink the liver, but it was only 1 day of clear liquids.

My doctor , has you do a full 2 week liquid diet, it really SUCKS, hardest thing in the world to do.... but it is one of the things we must do to prepair ourselves for the surgery.

Mine requires one month of Slim Fast High Protein shakes. Four a day and nothing else but non caloric liquids for one month prior to surgery. The idea is to shrink your liver and of course every pound you lose the better. Each doctor is different, you can try looking on your doctors page on OH and see if others have posted what he does. Take Care. Ellen

Donna-Marie- My Dr requires a two week diet prior to surgery and it consists of 3 shakes and two meals consisting of a large salad with vinagrette and 3oz protein. Then you do two days of clear liquids and cleaning out prior to surgery. It is supposed to be low carb to assist in shrinking the liver because it tends to be fatty in the obese and persons who drink a little too much on a steady basis. Hope this helps, Beth

I had my surgery at Pitt Mem. through Southern Surgical Center. Dr. Naziri requires a low carb diet for 2 weeks prior to surgery to shrink the liver in order to help ensure the surgery can be done laproscopically.
