Surgeon's in Wilmington
Hello Jeanette,
I am also researching to have WLS done here in Wilmington. I found 2 doctors here. Dr. James Harris and Dr. David Miles. I had a hard time getting a call back from Dr.Mile's office but I did find Terry at Dr. Harris's to be very friendly, helpful and knowlegable. He has done quite a few surgeries and only does the Roux-en Y. Speak with her with any questions you have...even if you don't decide to use him. (I do think I will though.) She can help steer you in the right direction.

Thanks! I too was looking at Dr. Harris. I put in a call to the Bariatric nurse (I think it's Terry) but I haven't heard anything back. She was on vacation last week, so I'm guessing she has a lot of catching up to do.
Good luck on your research and keep me posted if you decide to go through with it. I'll keep you posted on my quest as well.
Thanks again!
- Jeannette
I had my surgery done in Wilmington by Dr. James Harris (910-343-0811) on May 7, 2003. He is a wonderful doctor with a great track record. There is also another bariatric surgeon in Wilmington - Dr. David Miles - (910) 794-1717 - whom I would recommend just as highly. His nurse Helen is quite helpful. Dr. Miles has a much more active support group than Dr. Harris, so you may want to factor that into your decision. I know this from first hand knowledge because I used to lead Dr. Harris' support group the first two years after I had surgery. Although you can attend Dr. Miles' support group if he didn't do your surgery, you get much better support with Dr. miles, and it is a much more structured practice (doing mostly gastric bypass). Only about 20-30% of Dr. Harris' patients are gastric bypass. Last year I moved to the Chapel Hill area, and now attend the Duke WLS Monthly Support Group.
Feel free to email me at [email protected] if you want more information.
Good luck.

Hi Jeannette, I am two weeks post op and I am a patient at Dr. Miles. I had no problem getting in touch with them and getting a call back, but I also had a physician refferal to him. If you call just ask to speak to Kathy, I am sure that she will help you with whatever you need! They really are a great staff and have a pre op and post op established routine that works. Good luck!
Dr Harris did my surgery in Sept 05 and I was very pleased with him and his staff. He doesn't have great bedside manner, but then why do I need that? My PCP (Peter Kramer) said that Harris was the best laparoscopic surgeon on the East Coast of the US and that if his mother was having the surgery, that's where he would send her. The support group is nice too..
Good luck and email me with any questions you might have...

I had my surgery with Dr. James Harris in November '05. He's really great and easy to talk to. I have had NO problems at all. Spent one night in the hospital. Has surgery on Wednesday morning and I was back to work the next Monday. The office staff is really nice, I've never had any problems from them.
Good Luck!
