Moncton vets - a few questions

Finally got my call for surgery today - I'm booked for April 23! It's real now!

After reading a lot of forums here, it's pretty clear that every doctor has a different regime. I have read the info from Dr. B's office (and my notes from the info session) quite a few times but I still have some questions for the Moncton vets so I can get a clearer picture of what to expect:

1. What was/is a typical day like for you food and liquid wise (menu examples would be great) during the different phases after surgery?

2. Are the required vitamins really that hard to take in the morning? Has anyone actually invested in the chewable type?

3. How often do you weigh yourself? Does anyone NOT weigh themselves every day/week and just wait for check-ins?

Edit:

4. I'm going to take the exercise thing as it comes and how I feel. Better question: How long was it before your felt normal or like yourself again?

Thanks i advance for any answers!

Congratulations on your date, it's very exciting! I'm not a vet but going through what you're asking about.

1. The first couple of weeks for my preferences were protein shakes, strained soup, and no sugar jello.

2. I take a chewable multi, a tiny vitamin D (2), chewable chocolate Calcium (2), an Iron capsule and get a monthly B12 shot. I don't take any other medications so its not an issue, just the matter of remembering.

3. Weighing daily is addictive, I'm trying to get away from it.

4. Walking or VERY light exercise is recommended for the first few weeks. You don't get full clearance until at least week six but even them I might be hesitate to lift heavy weights or such for a bit. I walk and do cardio / aerobic dvd's but was advised to limit strain on the stomach and an area. That's what I understood anyway but may be mistaken.

Although I'm sure you're positive this is what you want to do, just don't be surprised if you have the odd moment of WTH am I doing?! Cold feet is natural, so don't worry if you have a slight panic attack or cold feet.

Congrats again,

1. What was/is a typical day like for you food and liquid wise (menu examples would be great) during the different phases after surgery?

The first couple days were hard for me to even swallow water, then it just becomes a bit easier as the days goes by.  When started blended foods, i had a hard time finding things to eat, just drank protein shakes, jello, popsicles, it was quite weird that with only 2-3 bites of jello i would feel stuffed!! LOL I sometimes wi**** still felt like that today when I eat. For menu, if you use MyFitnessPal, I have logged every single food since i was able to actually eat real food, so you can add me and go back and view my diary since the start MFP name is the same as here: better_life_ahead

It was very hard for me to get all my liquids in, even a bit over 1 year post op, some days i still don't get the recommended liquids in as i drink too much coffee and that doesn't count in their eyes.

2. Are the required vitamins really that hard to take in the morning? Has anyone actually invested in the chewable type?

At first i had a real had time, invest in a pill cutter if needed, i got mine at the dollar store and still works like a charm as i still need to cup my multi in 1/2 even now.  That also will get better in time when the little tummy heals.  I separate mine during the day so i don't take them all at once.  In the morning, i take 1/2 of a multi, 1 biotin, and 1 calcium/vit d Jamieson soft chewable, after noon i take 1 for iron, at night i take the other 1/2 multi, my vit b12, 1 calcium/vit d chewable.

Not sure if you already take multi vitamin, Rinette had suggested the Costco brand one however for me it never worked out as it make me puke everything i took it.  Even another person i know was not able to tolerate them, the one we found that worked best is the Superstore brand multi, they actually have like a little orange coding on them and they are not smelly like the other ones and am able to swallow them pretty easy.

3. How often do you weigh yourself? Does anyone NOT weigh themselves every day/week and just wait for check-ins?

At first it was every couple days, now it's a daily thing.  As in my fitness pal, once you are done tracking your food and your exercise for the day, it gives you a prediction of that you would weight in 5 weeks if everyday was like that day.  So on a daily basis i keep track of my weigh in the note section to see if it matches what it told me 5 weeks prior. However, i still only really COUNT my weight every TUESDAY as that was my surgery day.

Edit:

4. I'm going to take the exercise thing as it comes and how I feel. Better question: How long was it before your felt normal or like yourself again?

Exercise part, I have an elliptical and a stationary bike. I have had times when I work out 30 mins a day for 5 days a week, times when i took small breaks.....sometimes too much of long breaks, however i still try to force myself in the habit of exercising at least 5 days a week now between 30-45 mins a day. Sometimes it's hard, however i have noticed the scales moves better when exercise is added to my weekly routine.

Felt normal or like myself again, if you mean right after surgery, you might think you feel normal again after 2 weeks or so, but still make sure to take it easy for the time they tell you, for about 6 weeks, even if you think you feel fine, your body is still healing and you need to give it time and don't overdo it, i think it was about 6 weeks, you can resume any and all normal activities and exercise, but they should tell you all about this also.

Sorry so long, hopefully it will help a bit, don't hesitate to ask or message me if you have any other questions.

If someone is still ready this part, anyone is welcome to add me to myfitnesspal if you want to follow me, i track everything i put in my mouth and it's nice to see what other people eat sometimes too to give ideas as it can get very boring when you eat the same thing all the time....... still guilty on that part a lot!!

Have a nice day!

My advise to band patients is to pay very close attention to being over full & PBing. My band had slipped many months before it was diagnosed & i think that is part of my current stall.
