Consult Done...Papers Signed.
Had my appointment in Bathurst today. I first met with Carol the bariatric nurse, then the dietician, and finished off with Dr. Savoie. When I met with Dr. Savoie I asked the questions that I needed to and after he went through everything asked if I wanted to sign for the surgery now or take more time to think about it....um no more thinking signed, sealed and delivered :)
I return to Bathurst on March 26 for information session and he said surgery would be in the next 2 to 3 months if not sooner.
I asked about the doctor in Fredericton and was told that they are not sure if he will be doing the surgeries as he does not have a bariatric team. He may just do the consults and follow up for the patients in south western NB and that the surgeries will still be done in Bathurst. The details are still being worked out.
A tip for anyone that has to travel to Bathurst: I stayed at the UTC Pavilion at the hospital and it only cost $10.00 (included the parking fee). Subsequent nights are $25. The rooms have 2 twin beds and your own private bathroom. The rooms are just like a hotel room except no TV or internet. There is a TV lounge area and kitchen. The rooms are assigned on a first come first serve basis so no reservations are accepted. The only suggestion I would make is to take along an extra blanket....oh and the beds are really firm.
Congratulations, it's so exciting to be starting the process and I can't believe how fast it happens in Bathurst once you start, that's great! I had cold feet 2 weeks before surgery but was told this is normal, so don't be freaked out if you're having these mixed feelings. I knew I would always regret it if I didn't go through with surgery and now feel so grateful to have actually had this amazing opportunity. Continue to keep us posted as we're rooting for you and reach out whenever you have questions, there were many who were / are a support to me on here.
Enjoy this time and take care of yourself. All I wanted to do was eat when I heard I was going for surgery, I was like a squirrel storing up for winter!
I've been doing great, thanks. I've been in a stall since week 2 which I'm not happy about and hope it breaks soon! I started on solids this week which is heaven after 6 weeks of basically liquids. My sleeve is tolerating all foods so far, eggs, a few breads and bits of salad. I'm battling with the fact that surgery fixed my stomach but not my head! I have to actively battle myself, ie, I could have had ice cream in the first few weeks pre op and I wanted DQ but I chose Greek yogurt. Now with solids, I WANT fast food and junk because I've been restricted with eating but so far I've been making healthier choices. I hear the craving goes away after a few weeks of solids but eating junk food has been such a way of life that the habit is hard to break! I feel great though and am curious to see how this journey will evolve.
I think the head battle is the hardest of all. I am not sure if your city has a program called Craving Change. Here it is put on at the local health community center and is facilitated by a social worker and dietician. It is a 6 week program that deals with the emotional aspects of eating. It was a really good program. Just wish they had it ongoing rather than 6 weeks at a time.
Let me know what is happening with the stall. Is that normal after surgery?
