How to start/NEED to start
Hi there.
In the past year, my mother has undergone gastric bypass and has had great success with it.
High blood pressure and diabetes run in my family. I am only 25, and have been diagnosed with acid reflux and have to monitor my blood pressure as it is borderline high, which we suspect is mainly because of my weight.
I have gained a significant amount of weight (80lbs) in the past 4 or 5 years. My BMI is about 41.6. I am about 5'5 and 250lbs.
I have tried many diets, even prescribed Xenical by my doctor, with not much success. I have tried numerous diet pills and have followed many plans, with little or no success. I try to keep as active as I can with a fulltime job (I play baseball, bowling, walking the dog etc) but this does nothing for me. I do not eat a lot (only when I am hungry), and I feel I eat fairly healthy food, I don't snack much if at all. Still, I continue to gain and gain and gain. It is an endless battle that I am loosing.
I need this surgery to help gain back my health and hopefully be around long enough for children I may have in future. The longer I wait for this, the more damage is done.
How do you go about starting this process? Here is the tricky part: I just moved to New Brunswick within the past year from Ontario, and am still on a ridiculously large waiting list for a family doctor. I did have one in Ontario, but no longer have my Ontario health card.
Any direction would be greatly appreciated. There is no time like the present. I need a lifestyle change now, before it is too late.

Hi Shondalilies and welcome,
I, too, was a 'healthy eater' my problem was I didn't eat lunch OR breakfast. So by the time I did get food into me no matter how healthy... my body did the starvation mode thing and stored it all. I kept gaining and gaining. First off, I would recommend to eat every two hours, even if it is a small piece of fruit or yogurt, and whether or not you are hungry. This should help drive your metabolism. Mine was virtually non-existent.
I had to wait a year for a doctor myself years ago... so I understand that well. I am not sure if any after hours clinics would refer you to Dr Beausoleil, Dr Marc Savoie or Dr Sermadjin (not sure of the spelling) all surgeons who perform the bariatric surgeries in New Brunswick. You could always ask whatever attending physician you meet on one of those visits.
Where in NB do you live?
I have high BP and insulin resistance. I force myself to exercise every day even though I live in chronic pain (but you seem to have this all covered.)
I have been on the waiting list for Dr Beausoleil for 6 years and for 3 years with Dr Savoie. I am getting my VSG surgery Sept 21. Call and keep up with whomever is tracking your wait list for a family doctor. I kept pursuing this and made sure I knew what number I was for a family physician. Always keep your eyes and ears open for anyone opening a practice, these docs will consult the wait list, but will also accept patients from a phone call if they have not closed their practice to new patients. Some offices may even give you the name of another physician who is opening up a practice soon.
I hope my information is of some help to you. If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to ask.
Take care and best of luck
Danielle
