Hi!  I'm brand new and was wondering what the process is for the lap band.  Have been looking at Lap Band surgery for a few years now and have finally decided to find out if my doctor will send a referal off for me.  Is there a certain place he has to send it?  Does NB cover it, I have several health related issues associated so I don't think that is a problem, but what is current proceedures?  I know they are doing it in Moncton and Northern NB what are the wait times like and does it have a wide range...from what I have seen and read, the wait times really seem to range from anywhere from a year to 4 years!  Anyways, just looking for some feed back!  Thanks!

Your family Dr should know this already but he/she  will need to refer you to either or both Drs. 1 in Moncton, and 1 for sure in Bathurst.

Don't know much about the Lab Band as i just got sleeved. My referal was sent in Sep 2007 and just got sleeved Feb 2012, unsure what the wait times is now if your referal is just put in.

NB will cover it if approved by the Dr.

I had to provide a 6 months of dieting info, then my Fam Dr was able to refer me.

After seeing Dr in August, 2011, got the approval for surgery, then i had to attend a day session, then pshych evaluation, the pre op testing, then surgery, that is how it went for me.

WOW!  Wait times are still that long eh?  Thanks for the info.....I have just started looking into the sleeve as well.  The Dr. that do this type of surgery will advise you what would be better for you correct?  Well, I guess I will have to wait and see what happens!  Hurry up and wait...and wait by the sounds of it....thanks again!

This may not  apply to you but others read these.  Dr B will only do the band on patients over 55 and zilch for those 60 plus.  Also, I did not have a psyc evaluation in Moncton.

yep...unless he changed his mind. He thinks the risks are too high. I think he lost an older patient. He takes it personally if he loses a patient.
Dr S goes case by case.

Im really new to this as well, just got my family dr to put in a referal for me today actually. Did I read that right that you can only have durgery if your bmi is between 55 and not over 60?

I was talking about the ages of 55 & 60- Dr B does not fo anything but the band on patients over the age of 55 & nothing for patients over 60. That was a couple of years ago.
