I miss NB!
Well, I've been lurking, not posting alot, as those who will remember me will remember some of the issues I've been through to get WLS. My last update was that I was finally approved after waiting 7 years to see Dr B, but my approval came to late for me to go see Dr B in Moncton, as we were posted, and our house sold, and a new job waiting for me here in Winnipeg.
I had resigned myself to another waiting list, and as soon as I was settled here in August, I got the base here to send me in another referral to a surgeon in this area. I really lucked in, my referal went to a private clinic here in Winnipeg, I was contacted in October for my first appointment with them, had to go see their shrink, dietician, ect. But got my Lap-Band two days ago. My surgery was still covered, by my health-care provider, but apparently there is no wait list for a private clinic, and DND has special coverage for this particular clinic (its in a MALL...lol). Tho most pers who go there have to pay for surgery themselves.
Their pre-op diet here is more restrictive, 690 cals a day, on something called SlimTime. Two shakes and one bar a day. I lost 10 lbs the first week, and the dietician told me she didn't want me to lose more than that, so put me on two cups of non-starchy veggies a day for the last week.
Its a bit surreal for me at the moment, they fixed a hiatus hernia while in there, I still can't believe after waiting almost 8 years, I've finally got a chance to be a healthier me. I was originally planning on a lap band when I first went to see Dr B, as I knew I wasn't going to be around for fills, ect, being a military family. We had decided to do the RNY. HOwever, after getting here, and talking to the surgeon who did my surgery, I went back to lap-band, as he said alot more GP's are getting trained on Lap-band fills, ect. Plus, I will be stuck here for atleast 5 years, and he stated that 80% of patients don't require adjustments after the two to three year mark.
I would like to say thanks to all those who have the courage to share your stories, the good and the bad, its a huge help to those like me. I miss NB alot, and really don't like this province much, but am making the best of it. Its certainly not HOME. LOL. With any luck, I will be back in NB in 5 yrs or so.
Cheers to all!!

Hi Mary!! How have you been? Hows your son doing? Is he still in the military?
Yes, it was a wonderful christmas present, and I'm pleased to be able to go back to my original WLS procedure of a lap-band. I know the weight-loss will be slower, but I'm ok with that. As long as I have the tool to help me feel full, and not constantly hungry, it should be just what I need! The wait list out here for provincial coverage is normally 18 months, however, DND sent me to a private clinic, where pers normally pay for this surgery, and it cut the time less than half. It happened so fast, that although I've been waiting 7 years, it hasn't sunk in yet. I'm excited and scared at the same time. There seems to be a good support group up here in MB too. Tho I really really miss the east coast. Its friggen cold here, -19 today, with the windchill of -30. Not used to that yet!
Hope your holidays are the best!! Take care!

Awesome news it may take you longer with the Band but it will give your body and skin a chance to recover . I am happy I went with the band when the weight has not come off I look at what I have been eating and it is my issues not the band. I use to read other posts saying remember it is a tool you still need to deal with why you over ate in the first place and think that will not be me but it has been :) this time next year you will be be shopping for all kinds of new clothes.
I don't mind it taking a bit longer, although here in MB, bandsters are almost in hiding! It seems as though most of those who get WLS go with RNY or sleeve. Its hard to find another bandster here. I have't had my first fill yet, and now that I'm healed, I've got almost no restriction, even bread is ok. I get my first fill 17 Jan. I know it will still give me issues, but I'm also glad that if the occasion does arise, I can still have a bite of my daughter's birthday cake, or a special dinner prepared by family, just smaller portions!
Can't wait to go shopping! LOL....
