7days and still can't eat! Need advice!
It has been 7 days, one overnight in the ER at the Dumont and still I am unable to eat! What is wrong with me?
I was so dehydrated from vomitting for five days that they did an IV of fluids and checked that my lap band didn't slip, but after my fill three weeks ago nothing has been the same! When I try to eat I can feel the heartburn tracing a path from my stomach up to my throat, then the vomitting starts.
Dr. B is away until Jan 11th and the clinic said to go the the ER tomorrow.
I think my band is too tight, the the floroscope shows it OK. I had no trouble before this last fill, so that has to be it. Can you develope ulcers etc...this quickly?

Hi sweetie,
I attempted to comment to this one yesterday but was afraid to sound too discouraging or harsh.
Rest assured, nothing is wrong with you and everyone has a hard time with their lapband! You've surely noticed this by reading other banded patients posts! Some of us are looking at revisions, some of us suffer from excessive heartburn, some of us vomit everyday, some of us aren't losing and some are losing too much!
The lapband is the hardest weight loss tool on the market (and possibly the worst).
It's either your puking daily or eating too much, there is no happy medium. I have yet to meet one person who does not struggle with their band.
If you want my experience...not being able to eat after a fill is normal. I have never been able to eat solids after a fill because of the stomach swelling. It can take up to a month or so before I can eat solids comfortably. The word "restriction" means exactly just that, your food intake is restricted. You try to eat and it comes back up, so this means you're restricted. That is what fills are going to do!
Restriction doesn't get easier!
If you don't like this level of restriction, then you will need to get the 1cc or whatever amount taken back out.
It's not that I don't give a **** it's just, personally I have never been able to eat after a fill so reading that you can't eat and that you are vomitting 3 weeks after a fill is nothing new or surprising to me. This may sound sick to some of you, but it's my experience (and I know I'm not alone!)
I just usually tough it out, drink loads of liquids/ensure to stay alive, lose a **** load of weight and then my band loosens up and I can eat again. Then I plateau with my weight, so I get another fill and the cycle goes on and on and on and on.
There's another cycle I've noticed from other banded patients. They get a fill, vomit, unfil, weight gain, fill, vomit, unfill, plateau, fill, unfill, you get the point.
I hate to break the news to you, but the lapband sucks.
Now, with this said, if you can't even hold liquids down, then absolutely get a unfill. I have always been able to drink liquids and of course being able to drink liquids is an ABOLUTE must to survive. You mentionned you went to Dumont and they did not unfill you so I assume liquids can go down at this point because usually, if your too restricted where liquids can't go down, they unfill you.
Anyway that's my two cents.

You aren't the only one to have trouble with your band. I have had good restriction for a whopping 2 months in 2 years.
The floro does not show swelling around your band. Did they get you to swallow the floro fluid stuff? If they didn't , they have no idea how your stoma is doing.have removed any fluid from the band? If not you need 2 CC removed. I would be insistant about the only 2 cc & no more.
I had a fill at the begining of December & until a few days before Christmas I could eat anything, then suddenly I had a little too much restriction! I know that there is swelling there because my restriction goes up & down. This has happened over & over. I am trying to settle it without an unfill.
I have an appointment with Dr B on Jan 20.

Finally got an ER Doctor to listen and had an unfill of 2 cc's on Friday...thank god because I was in pain! Feeling so much better now, but again I will now gain weight like crazy and have seen a 1 lb increase in the last two days!I
I have always had a problem with reflux, and I think I need very small fills at a time to keep it working for me. The Doctor who does the procedure under floroscope agreed and said they would try 1/2 cc every month instead if that is OK with Dr. B.
Thanks for all the support!

I'm not sure how much in total you lost since your fill, but it's quite likely you'll regain some of that (if not all) while you rehydrate. Don't be discouraged...think of that loss as not a "true" loss b/c it was just dehydration. This is exactly what happened to me. You won't gain FAT weight unless you lose your mind and start overeating...which I'm sure you won't do. Baby your stomach for a good week (maybe liquids for a couple of days, then soft foods for another 2-3 days). You will eventually get back into the swing of things and start the normal weight loss again.
When I'm too tight I suffer from crazy reflux. I'm always too tight for a few days after a fill, but only once was I so tight I couldn't keep water down. I lost 11 pounds in 3 days...gained it all back the same week I was unfilled. I did not care - I was so relieved to feel better!! Anyway, I only get .25 cc fills now because I am so incredibly sensitive to them. Remember this is a marathon, and not a sprint! :)
