scared re surgery
Hi there 2010krw! I am Trish and i had the gastric sleeve in October, 2010. I just wanted to tell you my experience as something to think about. I had originally decided on having the RNY as I was looking for the most agressive surgery. My sister had it done in 2007 and had done fairly well with it, although now she is fighting regain. I had researched and the more I thought about having a pouch instead of a stomach and not having my regular stomach intact the more it kind of bothered me. Also hearing that you only malabsorb food for about 18months but malabsorb vitamins for life threw me off a bit. I am not trying to scare you, just telling you what affected my decision. So after much debate and more research I returned to Dr. B and resigned papers(had already signed for the RNY) three months later for the sleeve. I had alot of weight to lose and so was a bit worried about losing it all. One other thing that influenced my decision was that if you have RNY, it is kind of the last resort surgery. With the sleeve if I don't lose enough, I can get the rest of the duodenal switch to continue to lose. With all of that being said I am about 3 months out and down 69 lbs. I eat everything with no problems just wayyyy smaller portions. Dr. B is agressive and makes his sleeves small so restriction is great. The complication rate of sleeves is less because it is a smaller stomach only and no messing with the intestines. There are days when I could care less if I eat(crazy did I just say that?!) really it is true, some sweets are to sweet now and I always had a big sweet tooth before surgery. I was one of the lucky ones who lost hunger and have not felt hungry a day since surgery, only empty if that makes sense. I wish you all the best and just wanted to let you know why I switched surgeries. I am very very happy with my choice and wish you all the best in yours! Blessings Trish
