Hello Ruthann and welcome to this board. I don't know if nb medicare will cover a ns resident or not anymore. They used to because there were no doctore in ns doing weightloss surgeries, There are 2 or 3 now I think. Again I don't know for sure. the last time I heard there was still a 4 or 5 year wait list here in nb. Keep researching weight loss surgeries. A well informed patient is a patient much more able to deal with all aspects of weightloss surgery.

Hey there Ruthann! Welcome to the NB forum. It is a bit slower than the other forums but some great people on here to answer questions. The ones we know anyway, so I am not sure if NB covers out of province, as Mary said. Also I believe Dr. Beausoleil has up to a 7 year wait now and Dr. Savoie in Bathurst has up to a 5 year wait. It has become the only answer for some people to have WLs to help and so they have gotten very busy with long waiting lists. Don't get discouraged, just get referred as quick as you can and then at least you are on the list. Good luck with your research.

Hi Ruthann and Welcome! I'm over in Newfoundland. There are  no surgeons who do weight loss surgery in my province. My povincial health care approved the cost for me to go to NB and have RNY by Dr. Beausoleil. From the time my first consult was sent to his office - to the time of me actually having my surgery was 3 yrs. I had my surgery in 2008. The wait times have gotten much longer. But - please don't be discouraged - depending on the type of surgery you are looking for and what your co-morbidities are, and other factors - you really won't know what your specific wait time will be until you get the process started. So - jump in there and get going girl! Best of luck to you! PS Depending on your personal situation - and your health - self-pay may be an option for you?

In the past, the NS patients who went to Dr B were covered by NS. Out of province patients sometimes get through faster, depending on the NB funding. In other words, if the money allocated for surgery in NB does not cover all the surgery time available, the out of province people may be done earlier that  an NB patient. At least that is my guess as to why there seemed to be times when out of province people get done sooner.
