I had R N Y and it has it's ups and downs and from what I see so does all of the different surgeries. My advice would be to research all of the different wls/ You need to know what kind of an eater you are and what you can live with and what you can live without. Good luck

Thanks, I will continue my research..you make an interesting comment about "what kind of eater" and what you can live with or without.  I don't recall having read anything that suggests there is a difference... so I'll be looking for that info now.  Thanks again.

Hi Missuscat I am Trish! I had the VSG surgery 2 weeks ago. All I can tell you is why I chose the VSG over the RNY. Originally I wanted the RNY because I had alot of weight to lose and it is a bit more agressive than the sleeve. MY sister had it and has done fairly well with it. When I had time to think and research it more I realized I wanted the sleeve because of its simplicity. They only make your stomach smaller and don't mess with your intestines at all. Also I really loved the idea that you keep your own stomach and it has the pylorus intact so it works the way it was made to work. There are pros and cons to all surgeries and I think Mary was referring to your eating because some people actually choose the RNY because they love sweets and the dumping keeps them from indulging. That being said, I am doing well with the sleeve, no complications and have lost 40lbs in 4 weeks. I am a fast loser and not everyone loses at that rate but for me it is working. You cannot eat much with either surgery, especially in the beginning. It is a challenge right now to get in my protein and liquids but is improving everyday. I have no food sensitivities so far but haven't tried very much at this point. If you have questions just ask, good luck with your research! Trish

Trish is right. The type of eater you are has a lot to do with your choice in surgeries. I was a carb addict and had a mean sweet tooth at times. Dumping is so nasty that no matter how much you love a food, you don't love it enough to dunp more than twice on it.  The second time I dumped on cereal, I never touched it again. For me adversion therapy that accompanies RNY was what I needed. I may regain in the future (actually we all can) but it won't be beccause I eat carbs and sugars. Anythibg above 16 grams of sugar is totally off limits to me. I have now maintained my 130 pound weight loss for a year and a half without even trying.

Thank you both for the information.  Trish good luck with your journey and Marymother congratulations on maintaining... I have done some more reading and I too like the simplicity of the vsg, not sure if I need the RNY restrictions... Things to ponder for a while...it looks like I'll have lots of time to think about it all!!  Thanks again..
