Is plastic surgery generally required after WLS and the weight is gone?

Thank you for your warm welcome and candid response.

I am worried about the 'loose skin' being waay more than I am willing to accept.  I guess I wouldn't be upset with some, but if it were to be a lot, then I guess I would have to think about having further surgery.

May I ask, (please only answer if you feel comfortable doing so), is the cost of necessary plastic surgery for hideous flabby skin covered or is it something that the patient must cover.  And if it is not covered by our provincial health coverage, do you know how expensive it is?

I look forward to possibly being a much smaller size, but I want to be prepared for all possibilities.  I deal with things so much better if I'm not 'blindsided' by them....

Thank you again!  I hope your Thanksgiving was fantastic!

Provincial medicare will pay for a panni only if it is medically necessary. having rashes and excoriated area may not be enough to qualify. It will depend on the amount and the weight of the loose skin on the apron and the problems it causes you. A panniculectomy is NOT a tummy tuck and should not be confused with one. A tummy tuck is when they cut into the abdomin and cut and tighten the abd muscles and then remove the apron of loose skin. This costs anywhere from 5 to 8 thousand dollars. I will not be getting this unless I win a lottery LOL. A panni is JUST the removal of the excess apron  nor do anything with the abd area above the apron.   It will not tighten up a flabby belly and you will still have a flabbby  belly.

There is one plastic surgeon in Moncton who will not do just a panni and you must pay for the tummy tuck when you get the panni. Dr. B. has referred me to another plastic surgeon who will do just the panni. I have my fingers firmly crossed that I can qualify for a panni. Right now my apron is so large it interferes with buying and wearin clothes. I have  maintained a weight loss of in excess of 100 pounds now for over a year. The honeymoon period for me is now over and I mus****ch everything I put into my mouth so I am sincerely hoping not to regain. There are no guarantees in that area though.

I hope this answers your question, if not ask anything you wish to know. I have no modesty in talking about my skin/weight  issues. I will definately not **** on your feet and tell you it is raining. Not my style. LOL

hi, i was just reading your post

i had gastric bypass surgery 4 years ago and met goal about 9 months after...last year i had my first plastic surgery which was covered by medicare as well which was breast augmentation, not reduction...after losing my weight i had lost enough from that area however the skin was extremely saggy and as a result i still had rashes and the occasion back pain..

truthfully the gastic bypass was the least painful surgery i have had..i didnt even fill my pain prescription after and had no  complications...with the breast augmentation 2 weeks after the surgery my wound got infected when fluid built up around the scar tissue and my surgeon had to insert a long needle into my breast to suck the liquid up and i was placed on antibiotics and told to take 2 more weeks off.

as for the abdominiplasty and lipo option, it is not covered by medicare and if you want it, you have to pay for it however you can find the funds. i just had abdominoplasty and lipo done on jan 7th..and this one has been the most painful one of the two others..the operation is approx 3.5 hours long and you have to stay in the hospital at least overnight...they will insert at least two drains which will suction fluid out that you will have to dump and measure everyday and keep a journal of how many ccs drain each day..the first week you will find it very difficult to walk and you wont be able to get out of a chair or anything by yourself, you will need someone to stay with you for at least the first week.

it is very painful after and you will remain sore for quite a while..i had 2 drains in for 2 weeks and he took them out last friday and since then my wounds have become infected yet again... the last three days i have had a fever, been extremely sore and been leaking so much fluid that i had to start wearing depends because it was soaking right through and getting my jeans wet. i went to the clinic on wednesday and was put on antibiotics yet again and informed not to take any extra strength tylenol or anything that may prevent a fever but to keep track of if i did continue to run one and i have been doing so and that if thursday and today i ran one to go to the emergency room at the hospital tomorrow, which i will be doing..

my reason for going through with the plastic surgeries as well as the gastric bypass is because when i was looking for information for the GB i already researched these options and i went through with the abdominoplasty because i was having extreme rashes and infections in my pubic area from having an 11 lb of excess skin overhang..

im just about to post some photos of my last two surgeries up on my profile if you want to look.
