Hi,
I'm 39 years old, had my first consult with Dr. Marc Savoie in August. My next consult is in October, surgery will be scheduled after that.
My BMI is >60 ----- I have done so much research. I've been on a waiting list in another province for 11 years.
When the lapband came out, I thought it was the best choice - least invasive, fastest healing, most flexible with fills, etc.
I went to see Dr. Savoie, and he told me there are restrictions to how productive the lap band is, and usual weight loss is about 20 to 30% of your total body weight based on studies. He is suggested the VSG, something which I always thought was gruesome as a procedure and it scares me to death.
That being said, it was the only surgery available in the province I was on a waiting list for, and would have jumped at the chance to have it done.
I've read more on people having lap bands removed to have the sleeve done, and heard horror stories about sleeve complications like leakage, etc.
I've read where people with lap bands get food like apples, lettuce, celery and carrots stuck, and most people on the sleeve can eat that kind of food with no issues.
I'd like to hear from some people who have considered either, or both, or have had the lap band reversed/removed for the sleeve.
Thanks for all your imput. I appreciate it.

Hi Ocean902! My name is Denise. I am getting my surgery on the 14th of this month. I am getting the sleeve done. Dr Beausoleil told me that with my BMI being over 60 that the sleeve is best! I personally think it is as well. I even watched it get done on youtube scared the hell out of me but I know its the only way for me to go. Everyone is different and we all have our own opinion and preference. For me I would say trust your doctor he knows what is best hun. It's normal to be scare. I hope this helped a bit. Good luck! Your in my thoughts and prayers.
Take care cause we care
Hugs

As a successful lapband patient, I would go with sleeve. For many reasons:
- My results aren't typical with lapband, I've been very lucky
- I get stuck on so many healthy foods (raw vegetables, etc)
- There is no maintenance with the sleeve, I have to go to Bathurst very often for fills, unfills, etc.
- The lapband can malfunction at any time\
- The lapband is unpredictable
Don't get me wrong, I love my band, but if I had a do over, I would of picked the sleeve.

Thank you so much for your honesty.
I have only just read that so many people have the band removed to get the sleeve done. I'm glad you have success and have achieved all of what you needed it to do to assist you in your weight loss.
I'm so excited. I've been waiting forever it seems. Eleven years.. and now it's down to just a few months. It's so surreal.
Hi - I can't comment on personal experience with the lapband or sleeve - but do know that for people with BMI > 60 - the sleeve is probably the most highly reccomended. I sure some filks on here can help you out with the info you need. And don't forget to check out the other areas of OH and other web sites as well for info. Good luck!
Hi Ocean 902! It is good to do research, I myself have been through lots and lots of research in the last few years. I originally wanted the DS and it wasn't offered in our province. So then I decided on the RNY gastric bypass with Dr. B in Dieppe. I have a sister who had the RNY and was successful with no complications. The more I thought about it and researched the sleeve the more it appealed to me. So alas I returned to Dieppe to re-sign my papers to the sleeve and have not had doubts since. What attracted me to that choice of surgery was: Low maintenance, no foreign objects in me, no slippage, my own stomache and fairly quick healing with low complication rate. Dr. B is considering doing only them eventually and no lap-bands. Anyway everyone has their reasons for choosing different surgeries and those were mine. Just a little bit about my journey and I wish you peace as you decide on yours. Keep us posted on your journey. Trish
