Hi folks...just a question for New Brunswickers who have had the WLS...how much do you have to pay out of pocket, or does Medicare pay for it completely?

If done in NB, no cost as long as you meet the criteria.

You must have a BMI of 40 or more or a BMI of 35 with co-morbiditys. Dr B will only do the band for women 55 & over. The doctor will want to know that you have dieted multiple times & failed.

Great in theory if you are willing to wait 5 yrs for surgery.......

How long does it ususally take after they call you for your consultation appointment?  I first applied about a year ago and I was told I will be getting a call around the first of December to come for a consultation. This is with Dr. Savoie.

hi there

Thanks, actually I have lost 93 lbs since Feb 1/2010, that is when I started the liquid diet to prepare for my surgery.  I lost 38 lbs beforen surgery on April 14th and 55 since.  When I started my journey, you had to go see Dr Dornan,an endocrinologist for a year before he would wright a referral to Dr B, Dr S was not around then.  I started seeing Dr Dornan Aug 2007 until Spring 2008, when the rules changed and all you needed was a referral from your family physician. Dr Dornan sent my referral then to Dr B. as Dr S was no on the scene then I dont think.  Once Dr S did come on the scene I requested Dr Dornan to send a referral however he claimed he knew nothing of him and wouldnt send a referral to him.  I had my family Dr send a referral to both surgeons Feb 2009.  I often called them monthly to see my status.  After much deliberation I decided I had to self pay and go to Montreal.  I have not removed my name from the lists as I really wantd DS surgery and hoped that by the time my  number comes up someone would be offering it however I have still not received a call from either DR....that should tell you how long of a wait it is...too long.  I fought with Medicare and many politicians regarding the poor process of not triaging these patients but only going by referral dates...which is ridiculous in my opinion but I got alot of them just talking in circles and no real answers...thats another whole story for another time.  I truly hope you do get a consultation in December but I wouldnt put money on it....be sure to keep calling them once a month to check your status

hope this helps

Angela

Wow, thank you for the advice re calling regularly to check on my status in line...I did that only once and was told december, so it's good to know that could change so I won't be too upset if Dec comes and it doesn't happen.

What does one have to do to be eligible for WLS?  I've tried dieting and exercise to no avail and I think my weight is going to kill me if I can't get this surgery soon.

I'm really upset by the fact that someone I know who can't be bothered to try diet and exercise apparently has a date for this surgery and I can't seem to find someone who can tell me how to get this done.
