I heard through a friend at work who is on the waiting list for Dr Beausoleil that Dr B recently had a patient die after surgery, she also told me that he has had 4 patients die out of 240 although her understanding was that 2 had heart issues that they did not disclose to him.  Has anyone else heard this....I thought I should put it out there for any of Dr Bs waiters to try and confirm and to question the office for any concerns

I didn't know about a recent paitient of Dr B's passing away after surgery.....I do know about the other ones as they told us that in the all day information session and that was because of their age and health issues and things they didn't follow through with after the surgery.  There was a patient in their mid 30's as well and that was underlying health issues as well.  I will ask when I go up there on the 31st to sign my consent forms for my surgery.
Striving for a healthier me.

At our all day education session many moons ago - over 3 yrs ago I think - they told us that Dr. B. had 3 of his patients pass away after WLS. They did tell us some general details - but I can't really remember what they were. I have heard nothing about a recent death.

If memory serves me correctly none of the deaths were lapband patients, I believe they had other type of WLS.

The women that are death was from new brunswick ,they had health problem,Dr B didn`t know..they didn`t tell him .its not because of the operation Dr B did. they only died after one of them was to old...That why Dr B don`t want to operate after 55 .Dr B is a very good Dr .i met him in person after my friend went for the gastro .and told us .the women had problem before the operation and didn`t know about it..but i have faith in Dr B .So i don`t have no worries about that .keep the faith girls..

I think it's fair to say that ALL surgeons accross the universe have loss a patient under anesthetic or during the recovery process when they have years of experience. There is risk of internal infections,  heart issues, breathing issues, etc.

Every surgeon should explain this to their patients prior to going under the knife.

The stats are low of course, but surgery is surgery and no matter what kind it is and there is always a risk.  Which I think is the reason behind the consent papers - does anyone actually read that btw? I do not remember what mine said AT all.

Losing a patient is not something that is always attributed to a surgeon's skill. Most times it  involves a underlying condition which neither  the surgeon or  patient were aware of and that was not found during the pre opt testing.

I have a hard time believing that someone  had a heart condition and did not tell Dr. Beausoleil. After all you are refered by your family doctor who should  provide the surgeon with your medical history. At least that's what my doctor did when she sent mine to Dr. Savoie. He was already fully aware of my medical conditions beforehand and I didn't tell him anything except maybe what mg of meds I was taking for what condition.

All that to say though, no one should stress themselves thinking about that. It's harder when it's elective surgery but the benefits ouweigh the risks, trust me.

Think positive and visualize the new you :)

Positive thinking will get you everywhere you want to be in this world.

The heavier you are the greater the risk of any surgery. RnY is Major major surgery. It also isn't short surgery and the longer you are under, the greater the risk.  On top of that, a person can have a bad reaction to the anesthetic, even if they have not had a reaction in the past.  I have full confidence in Dr B.- all I want to know is the odds, because some deaths are inevitable.

I seem to remember now -that one of the people who died had a very rare connective tissue disease - and none of the internal staples or stitches would hold - something that wasn't discovered until she was actually on the table. I believe one of the other deaths was due to a blood clot post-op - one of the very real risks and complications of any surgery. Maybe Krista can remember more -she was at the education session with me that day. Good night everyone!

Hi there ladies, I have been busy since my last post. I actually had my appt on March 18th to sign my papers. At that time Dr. B was informing me of the risks of RNY and told me he had just lost a patient. He wasn't allowed to tell details(perfectly understandable) but did say she was young, healthy(outside of obesity) and the surgery went very well. He said she died two days after surgery. He strongly encouraged me to have the sleeve, a much safer surgery, with less risks. I had a blind moment of panic because I hadn't seen that coming and didn't know what to do. Thank goodness my lovely sister was with me and she had had gastric bypass in 07 and has done well. she asked if I could still have the gastric bypass and he said yes, that it was his job to inform and not persuade. so I am having it and still very excited and have full confidence in Dr. B. I figure that whatever went wrong he will be extra careful to watch for from now on. So that is what happened while I was there. Oh yah and they told me it would be 4-6 months b4 surgery.
