Breakfast

I am just at the start of this journey.  I am years from surgery and desparate to take matters into my own hands and to take control of my health before it is too late for me.  I am struggling to find a good, healthy breakfast that will fill me up and keep me going until lunch.  Any suggestions?

I make a protein oatmeal combo. I mix oatmeal with a tablespoon of flax meal, a few raisins, either a heaping tablespoon of isolate protein powder (from the bulk barn), or 3 tablespoons of hemp hearts, and some cinnamon. I added half water and half soy milk. I nuke it for a couple of minutes and have it with soy milk and brown sugar Splenda. I really don't measure anything, so amounts are approximate. Remember, I don't eat more than a cup of food at a time. Except for the Splenda, everything in this has health benefits.

Kittymom's breakfast sounds really good. I can no longer tolerate cereal of any kind so my breakfast is more protein oriented. I will either have a 2 eggs and cheese omelett or a fruit cup with 1/2 cup of cottage cheese. I have lost quite a few meats so I rely heavily on cheeses for protein. I eat about 5 or 6 servings of different cheese a day. (maybe more)

You know, you can never go wrong trying to lose on your own. I know how you feel though. I waited almost 5 years before I got in to see Dr. B. In the end I figured I would never get in for surgery so in May of 2008 I decided to diet on my own and I lost 40 some pounds before I ever got into surgery, That loss really helped me with the losses I show now and It got me into the watching what I eat mode long before I ever got surgery. I believe having this has helped me post op.

Good luck to you whatever you decide to do. Post often and stay in touch.

Thanks for the ideas ladies.  I am not much one for eggs but the oatmeal combination sounds really good.  I had flax bread this morning (2 slices) along with 1 ounce of cheese.  Also had fresh strawberries and a couple of glasses of water.  I was fine until about 11:30 and then I was hungry.  Had a taco salad (about 1/2 cup of chili over lettuce with an ounce of cheese) along with some veggies and dip and more strawberries.  Felt hungry all afternoon.  The positive is that I made it 1/2 way through the day without feeling hungry and managed to make it through day 2 without any pop.  This is my one true weakness.  All in all, I would say Day 2 was a success!!!

The oatmeal mix has 10-15 grams of protein. Up the hemp or whey to up the protein.

Your food looks good but if you want to feel   full longer you may need to ramp up your protein a bit. Actually for RNY people the rule of thumb is start with protein first then veggies (high in fiber is better)   and if you still have room then carbs. Don't eliminate the carbs though you need them. Just have complex carbs not simple carbs.

I somedays eat a cheese or yougrt every 2 or 3 times a day. I don't like to feel hungry.

How much protein should I be having?  I think I am still stuck in the mind set of fruits / veggies good and meats / cheese bad.  I definitely need some major reprogramming!!!

Post-op we aim for 60 mg per day. You should have some at each meal.  A seving of most meat is the size of a deck of cards.....the usual size of a regular deck LOL
