I just got a photocopy of my labs today. They look alright. However i don't know the "normal values" It says right on the report if the numbers are high or low with arrows but does not give the normal values. I can't seem to foind the canadian value. American numbers are of no use because they are measured different. Here are my values:

VITAMIN B12= 489
CALCIUM (blood) = 2.31
PHOSPHATE (blood) = 1.08
MAGNESIUM (blood) = 0.90
GLYCOSYLATED Hb (blood) =0.054
GLUCOSE fasting (blood) = 4.1
CHOLESTROL (blood) = 3.74.....................low
TRIGLYCERIDES (blood) = 1.56
HDL cholestrol                    =0.97.................low
LDL cholestrol                    =2.06.................low
cholestrol/HDL ratio           = 3.9

Does anyone know what the normal values are?

hi Mary , i found this website it might help you................................................................................................................................................... http://www.mcc.ca/Objectives_Online/objectives.pl?lang=english&loc=values ( copy and paste to your browser ) . Also i noticed that you do not have a value for vitamin d3 , mine was low and i was taking 2000 iu for several years and had recently bumped it up to 3000 iu because of inflamation in my knee. I've upped it to 5000 iu and feel great, less depressed, more energy , less pain and no swelling in my knee. All of us living north of the southern united states are low. I cannot emphasize how good i feel because of vitamin d, calcium and fish oil. I've dropped 10 pounds since my fill last thursday.              just once

Now I feel totally ignorant. I made 100% in my nutrition course during nursing training and for the life of me I don't remember much about vitamin d3. I know the fat soulables are ADE and K. These are the ones that you can actually overdose on and have toxic effects. 5000iu sounds like a lot. Do you buy vitamin d3 in pill form?  I have arthritis in my back. Would d3 help that? Thank you for your reply.

Yes 5000 sounds like a lot, but if you go in the sun at high noon for 20 minutes (dark skinned people need more ) in the summer you will create 15000 -20000 iu. its not really a vitamin but a pro-hormone which regulates many body systems ,  It not only helps arthritis  , high blood pressure, depression, CHF,and cancer. and many other conditions The resesearch in the last 10 years is amazing but the general public and doctors aren't aware of it. People 100 years ago were taking 20000 iu a day until the government took it away and came up with the arbtrary 400 iu because it sounded like a big number and prevented rickets too.. pill form is great and its cheap to buy.take with calcium and fat ( i use fish oil) This video on youtube explains it better than me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HH1rB-Ya2UQ ( copyand paste into browser) Cheers

Mary, someone noticed that the further  from the equator the higher the rates of diabetes, cancer, depression, heart problems and so on and so on. The further you are from the equator you are the less vitamin D you get. and the more likely you are to be D deficient. Someone also asked, if the minimum vitamin D needed for good health is 400 unit, why can the liver make so much of it in a short time in the sun. As a result there are dozens of studies being conducted asking about the effects of vitamin D on all the diseases I mentioned earlier. Many Canadians are chronically deficient in Vitamin D. Basically, you could sit in the sun naked this time of year and not make any vitamin D. The sun is too weak. The current RDA for vitamin D is only enough for healthy bones. So many people, including me are taking extra D.

Amazing! Does the vitamin D that I take in both my calcium citrate and my centrum be enough? Do NUTS know about these findings?  My family doctor said my vit D levels were really good.

Doubtful 400 iu might prevent some bone loss which we all suffer from.... ask any dentist. Optimal levels for well being is reached at levels 12 times that much, I never had relief from my arthritis till last month when i added calcium 3 times a day (1000mg) to the d3.

Stephen, how much calcium do you take daily? 1000 nor 3000iu? I could certainly try 3000 of vit D. Couldn't hurt, may even help. Or do you need the 5000iu to see any real effect? Thanks Stephen.

OT Stephen, I see you opted for another Lap Band. Why? Are you doing better now with the  new band? You had such problems with the first one.

Mary I have been taking 5000iu  vitamin d3 since ocober/09 when they told me i was low, at that time i was taking 3000 iu per day. I noticed your calcium level was low , As you know vitamin d will help your body suck that calcium up into your bones. Many researchers say you need much more than 400iu for that to happen. Without adequate vitamin d your body will maintain your calcium balance by sucking the calcium out of your bones. I started taking calcium  333mg  plus magnesium (Jamieson brand) three times a day  plus 2  grams of fish oil , Always take your Vit d3 with calcium and fat ( I use fish oil because it  also reduces inflamation)and noticed a very relaxing kind of feeling, decreased appetite, reduced inflamation and pain and swelling  in my knee less pain in my arthritic back.  I twisted my Knee on the ice twice in January and recovered very quickly, i was really amazed by this, however, Iam not offering medical advice to anyone just saying what Iam doing and what seems to be helping me.
All i had was a port and tubing change as my tubing wa*****tured on one of my first fills after my initial surgery in oct /2008. Steve

I appreciate your candor Stephen. I gotta ask now, you say you take your d3 with your calcium and magnesium. Is that calcium carbonate with magneisum? I cannot absorb calcium carbonate. I must take calcium citrate. I understrand youatre not medically advising just stating what has worked for you.  You say you take d3 for depression. I take B100  complex for depression. I have the brightest neon yellow pee. LOL
